RESPONSIBILITIES Position Description The Senior Business Analyst, Data will report to the IT Business Analysis Manager, within the Data Team in the JERAGM IT Department. The Data Team is based in Singapore and is made up of a Data Engineering Team, Business Analysis Team and Data PM.
The JERAGM Data Team is leading delivery of a modern data platform using Azure Databricks as the foundation for business teams to build a data driven platform for decision making. The Databricks platform is in production, managing hundreds of datasets, and this role will be part of a new phase of growth to expand the scope of data collected, scale‑up data operations, improve data governance and deliver decision making tools to Traders.
The aim is to deliver a platform that enables:
Access to data
A central data lake for collecting, storing, checking and analysing market fundamentals
A central data warehouse for prices, trades, operations, valuation and risk
A central platform for capturing B2B information flows and creating AI agents
Analytics and AI
A platform for Analysts, Quants and Data Scientists in the business teams to build scalable analytics, visualisation and AI tools on a standard platform using common frameworks
Data management and governance
A central catalogue and intelligent data discovery tools
Data Governance processes supported by workflows and tools
Alerting, observability tools and ticketing processes to enable lean platform and data operations
The Senior Business Analyst, Data will be part of a small squad based in London with line management into Singapore. Their role is being created to provide a local SME as principal contact for the London business teams, including delivery of a portfolio of new data collection pipelines and continuous improvements to data management, governance and operations.
They will work closely with London based users, members of their squad, the IT Bespoke Development team and IT Platform Engineering team. At times, they will work with the Singapore members of the Data team and business users.
The Senior Business Analyst, Data will be expected to have the experience, knowledge and character to work largely independently in London hours, steering other members of the squad, while taking steer from their manager in Singapore.
To work effectively with users, they must understand the commodities trading business, and a talent for delivering value using data, analytics and AI technology. They must be driven and confident in leading meetings and facilitating collaboration across IT and business teams. They must be able to quickly understand both business and technology and manage the interface between users and IT in clear and simple language.
They must own and champion delivery via a structured, well organized, collaborative approach, at the same time as maintaining fast and agile delivery.
They will have responsibility for the following:
Helping users
find, collect and use data
Acting as primary contact, delivery lead and SME for London users
Owning and pushing for the delivery of user needs by the Data Team and IT
Working with users to prioritise their needs and understand trade‑offs
Driving delivery through the Data team bi‑modal Kanban and Scrum delivery models,
Helping Data Engineers breakdown, estimate and deliver changes.
Creating well structured, simple documentation in Confluence and JIRA
Understanding JERAGM's data and 3rd party data platforms, initially focusing on fundamentals for market forecasting and analytics
Leading collection of data from external sources from both a functional and technical point of view (including hands‑on work to understand APIs)
Setup of licensing in collaboration with the IT Core Platform and Procurement teams
Helping users identify and test Data Quality rules and then leading their implementation
Helping users understand, access and analyse data across the delivery life cycle; from time to time creating prototypes, worked examples or mock‑ups using Databricks, SQL, Python, Power Query, Excel and AI tools
Running user acceptance testing and supporting the Data PM in release planning, user communication and change control.
Championing a data SRE mind‑set for data operations across all teams, by representing user's needs into continuous improvement initiatives building out tools and automation
Helping business owners
manage, catalogue and govern data
Creating and maintaining a central catalogue and proactively seeking engagement and input from Data Owners in the business
Chairing governance meetings to review the catalogue, answer questions, identify data quality issues and driving continuous improvements
Updating users as new data is made available
Supporting setup and administration of role‑based access control
Working with IT Procurement to ensure compliance with license conditions, and leading continuous improvement to platform features to increase automation
Supprting periodic review of data usage and recommending changes or maintenance
Identifying, envisioning and driving improvements to Data team processes and tools across delivery and operations (championing Data SRE)
Acting as
escalation point for urgent support issues
Providing a point of contact for London users on highest priority operational issues and co‑ordinating support via the London squad or Singapore.
Note that in addition to these duties employees are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required.
QUALIFICATIONS Experience Required
Bachelor's degree in numerate subject or equivalent professional qualification
Around 7‑10 years' experience as an IT Business Analyst, Analyst Developer, Data Engineer or FO/Market Analyst within a trading house or through a vendor/consultancy
Experience of a Commodities Trading business, and a strong understanding of market and fundamental data
Understanding of data engineering and data modelling concepts and approaches
Hands‑on delivery experience working with data, analysis and BI tools e.g. SQL, Power Query, Excel VBA, Python (e.g. Pandas, PySpark), Databricks, Power BI, Tableau etc
IT delivery management experience with a commercial focus using Kanban, Scrum or other agile approaches
Person Specification
Team player and leader able to own and drive collaborative cross‑functional teams
Highly analytical and structured
Able to steer and delegate tasks into project teams while understanding detail when needed
Confident and effective communicator with professional and approachable manner
Self‑starter with pragmatic approach to problem solving, delivery‑mindset and common sense
Ability to work under pressure in Trading environment with a strong commercial focus.
