Machine Learning Engineer

The role

We're a San Francisco & Montreal based applied AI startup that's building the future of work in the banking industry. We are tackling a $100 billion/yr problem, doubling every quarter and pushing the boundaries of what's possible with multi-turn AI agentic systems.

Our goal is to tackle the type of automation problems that require long-context reasoning, tool orchestration across legacy systems, and strict compliance loops: the ones without known answers.

We've shipped real agents that handle real customer workflows in production. With a growing customer base and live deployments, we're scaling up fast and looking for deeply technical builders who want to have outsized impact early.

Our Engineering team is looking for a founding ML Engineer to take ownership of our entire ML stack and enable custom agents to come to life.

Your mission is to

• Develop the core ML/AI work at Saris, building custom, multi-modal workflow agents end-to-end

• Work closely with other engineers on the team to operationalize the core AI agents for production usage

• Build datasets, define metrics, and track the performance of our AI agents

• Define core evaluation pipelines to refine our AI agents

• Build reusable systems and tools that enable contributions from across the company and steadily raise the quality bar

• Work closely with the founders to help develop the ML/AI vision of the company, and to help drive that roadmap forward

Looking back, you have

• At least 5 years of ML/AI engineering experience, working as a senior/lead member of the team

• Extensive experience building, training, and deploying custom ML/AI models that solve complex problems for customers

• Experience building, training, and deploying LLM models that solve complex problems for customers (ideally conversational AI agents)

• Extensive knowledge on the inner workings of foundational ML/AI technologies, including deep learning and transformers

• Experience working collaboratively with other engineers, through code reviews and working sessions

• Experience working in small teams, moving fast without too much processes/overheads

• A deep passion for the ML/AI space, and be continually on the lookout for new techniques or architectures

Bonus Points If You

• Proficient in data processing, including cleaning and preparing data for training

• Proficient in working with various databases, including SQL and data warehouses

• Experienced with creating API services that expose ML/AI functionalities to other teams/customers

• Experienced with building useful technologies based on LLMs, with both closed and open models

• Experienced in helping the team grow, both in people/processes and in maturity of the technology

• A great communicator, able to articulate your ideas clearly and succinctly, in both verbal and written form
