Qualifications:

  • A minimum of an Associate's Degree in speech-language pathology/communication disorders, or post-secondary equivalent coursework, equivalent training, and experience.
  • Understanding of typical childhood development (including typical language development)
  • Demonstrate aptitude or competency in the skills required for an SLP -A
  • Prior experience working in a school setting, preferred
  • Bilingual, preferred
  • Good communication skills with students, coworkers, administrators
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

Reports To: Director of Student Services, School Principal, and supervising Speech-Language Pathologist

Job Description: Under the direct supervision of a certified Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLP-A) works with students who have been identified as having speech-language disorders, as well as other disabilities that adversely affect the student's educational performance and requires specially designed instruction in order to succeed in the classroom; performs related duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The following duties and responsibilities to occur under the direct supervision of the certified/supervising SLP:
    • Implement documented treatment/session plans or protocols developed by the supervising SLP
  • Document student performance, and report the information to the supervising SLP
  • Program and provide instruction in the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices
  • Assists with screening of students to determine need for intervention (without interpretation)
  • Assists the supervising SLP during assessments of students exclusive of administration and/or interpretation
  • Assists with providing in-service education to team members, when applicable
  • Performs clerical duties such as preparing instructional materials and scheduling students
  • Ability to collaborate with teachers and school staff
  • Conduct oneself ethically within the scope of practice and responsibilities for an SLP-A, and behave in a manner that is consistent with the principles and rules outlined in the ASHA Code of Ethics
  • Self-identifies as an SLP-A to families, students, patients, clients, staff and others. This may be done verbally, in writing, and/or with titles on name badges.
  • Attend staff meetings, as required
  • Documentation of direct and indirect supervision
    • First 90 days a total of 30% supervision weekly (20% direct, 10% indirect).
  • After the first 90 days, minimum supervision of at least one hour per week.
  • Maintains confidentiality with respect to students and their records
  • Demonstrates the ability to formulate meaningful questions to achieve effective outcomes
  • Participates in professional development activities which lead to improved job performance.

Terms of Employment: Salary and work year to be determined by the Norwich Board of Education. Please note that salary listed is the current school year salary. The 25/26 school year salary is TBD.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of support services.
