Job Details:

Purpose

To conduct, supervise, and administer scientific research; coordinate research activities in the Banner Research Group.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct scientific research and assist students in their research. Investigations are primarily geologic and environmental, involving geochemical analyses of trace elements and stable and radiogenic isotopes in samples of water, soil, rock and wood. Research areas include caves, aquifers, surface water, tree-rings, climate, paleo-environments, and sustainable urban systems. Field and laboratory research activities and data analysis are required. Authoring and co-authoring of scientific papers to disseminate research results is required. Research may include evaluating educational programs. Manage budgets and expenditures associated with research activities.

  • Identification of grant opportunities, and inception, writing, editing, and submission of grant proposals and budgets to federal, state and NGO grantors. This will involve working with affiliated ESI faculty to i) write and submit proposals to support their research, and the research outlined in function 1 above, and 2) identifying opportunities for interdisciplinary grant proposals and organizing faculty teams to pursue these opportunities

  • Co-supervision of research and laboratory activities of employees, graduate students, and undergraduate students. Assist with oversight of laboratory facilities and procedures and database management.

  • Assist in the management of the Environmental Science Institute. This includes review and approval of documents online, organization of staff activities, and coordination of ESI's research networks, including the Texas Water Research Network.

  • Marginal/Incidental Function: Assist with special events and other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in Geosciences or Environmental Sciences (emphasizing Geochemistry) and at least 6 years of relevant experience, OR Doctoral degree in Geosciences or Environmental Sciences (emphasizing Geochemistry) and at least 4 years of relevant experience. Minimum of 1 year of related experience or a strong record of publication in the field. Experience developing peer-reviewed publications and proposals related to water resources, paleoclimate, isotope geochemistry, and sustainable urban systems. Experience in conducting, interpreting, and modeling stable and radiogenic isotope and hydrologic and climate data. Strong communication and team-building skills.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

A strong publication record in isotope geochemistry and/or paleo-environmental analysis. Research experience in scientific studies of sustainable urban systems and community-based participatory research.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range

$68,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions
  • Fieldwork may include extended hours outdoors in varying weather conditions, walking over rough terrain, and occasional overnight travel.

  • Laboratory work may require handling of geological and biological samples, use of precision instruments, and work with geochemical materials following safety protocols.

  • Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods and lifting materials or equipment up to 40 pounds.

  • Standard office and repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation is also expected, including data analysis, manuscript and report writing, and grant proposal preparation.
