Job Summary: The Automation Engineer/Department Coordinator is responsible for providing administrative and technical support to the automation engineering team, primarily focusing on supply chain/ordering, documentation, project coordination and engineering support. The Automation Engineer/Department Coordinator is additionally responsible for supporting the development of assigned projects via design, fabrication, assembly, and assisting with the launch of new automated equipment into production. They will also maintain outside vendor relations, file structure management, ensuring adherence to engineering standards, assisting with project planning/scheduling, tracking project progress, and ensuring deadlines are met by maintaining the scheduled project forecast.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supply Chain Management
  • Responsible for the department's project supply chain management (purchasing, receiving, shipping, P/O management).
  • Reviewing BOMs for in-house automation systems.
  • Purchasing components for in-process builds and spares for existing builds.
  • Working with central stores to add spare components for existing systems.
  • Document all PO transactions and properly bill them to projects using in-house software.
  • Shipping/Receiving for all project component orders.
  • Department Documentation
  • Ensuring the development of proper documentation for manufactured projects (bill of materials, spares, required preventative maintenance, other turn-over package requirements).
  • Working with engineers to verify build components are properly revised and documented (document/file/component revision tracking management, file naming conventions maintained/updated).
  • Following up with engineers to ensure handoff packages contain all URS requirements.
  • Continuous improvement in department documentation (updates to build guides, improved formatting of all department documentation and turn over packages, etc.).
  • Engineering/Technical Support
  • Responsible for supporting the automation engineering team via design, fabrication, assembly, and testing of basic automated systems, EOATs, fixtures, molding cage systems, and custom guards.
  • Supports the Automation Engineering team with sustaining engineering related tasks such as route cause analysis, testing, reporting, continuous improvement and communications with manufacturing department management.
  • Vendor Relations
  • Act as main point of contact for all vendor related matters (quote procurement, ordering, logistics, shipping/receiving).
  • Scheduling all vendor-related meetings/appointments (on-site service and maintenance, vendor component demonstrations, etc.).
  • Setup vendor accounts and facilitate ordering (sending proper tax forms, contact accounts payable, etc.).
  • Component source management between vendors for optimal lead-times and pricing.
  • Schedule Coordination Assistance
  • Assist department management with the project schedule by maintaining a view of the full forecast and alerting management/engineers of potential resource overlap, approaching deadlines, scheduling conflicts, and opportune moments to plan work around schedule openings.
  • Meeting Coordination Assistance
  • Scheduling for scope reviews, URS reviews, design reviews, regulated sustaining meetings, etc.
  • Act as a scribe for meeting notes.
  • Route for approval signatures (URS/Design review acceptance electronic signatures).
  • Inventory Management
  • Manage common components and hardware system (i.e. min/max quantities, utilization of components).
  • Regularly identify new common components and retire outdated components.
  • Material recycling and disposal.
  • Update all related documentation regarding changes to hardware and components.
  • Receive and serialize materials for project specific builds.
  • Ensure all shop consumables are properly stocked and stored (i.e. CNC coolant, 3D printer filament, drill bits & endmills etc.).
  • Regular attendance and professionalism.
  • Abide by all applicable SMC procedures and guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications:

  • A two-year post high school diploma / certificate in a related field or technical trade and 1 year of experience; OR 3 years of demonstrated work experience in a relevant field.
  • Proficient PC skills in a Windows-based environment, capable of utilizing multiple Windows applications (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Collaborative team player.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and bend to move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with database management (IQMS etc.).
  • CAD software familiarity (SolidWorks is preferred).
  • Ability to read/understand part prints.
  • Simple mechanical assembly.
  • Basic power tool/hand tool usage (band saws, belt sanders etc.).
