Senior Accounting & Operations Specialist
Location: New York, NY (On-site, Full Time)
Reports to: Controller

Summary
Modernus is looking for a senior accounting professional who is truly strong with numbers — someone who not only manages financial data but understands it, interprets it, and spots trends early. You'll help refine and strengthen our KPIs, improve visibility across the business, and elevate the accuracy and speed of our financial processes. This is a key role within a three-person accounting team in a fast-growing company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strengthen collections processes, reduce aging, and improve follow-up consistency
  • Partner with the Controller to streamline and accelerate accounting operations
  • Support full-cycle accounting across AP, AR, GL, and reconciliations
  • Drive a faster, more accurate monthly close
  • Maintain audit-ready documentation and strong internal controls
  • Support job costing, margin analysis, and construction project accounting
  • Analyze financial data, identify trends, and flag issues early
  • Build, refine, and maintain KPI dashboards (aging, cash flow, margins, job costs)
  • Recommend KPI adjustments as the company grows and operations evolve
  • Improve workflows and eliminate bottlenecks across the accounting function
  • Collaborate closely with the accounting team and leadership to improve financial clarity

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
  • 7+ years of accounting or accounting-operations experience
  • Strong analytical mindset with the ability to interpret financial trends
  • Proven experience creating or improving KPIs and reporting dashboards
  • Strong understanding of financial statements, job costing, margins, and variance analysis
  • Construction or manufacturing experience strongly preferred
  • Advanced QuickBooks proficiency
  • Strong Excel/Sheets skills (pivots, lookups, formulas)
  • High attention to detail with excellent numerical judgment
  • Clear communicator who works well in a collaborative team
  • Demonstrated success strengthening AR/collections
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, on-site work environment
