Position Summary:
The Provider Assistant works with a multi-disciplinary provider team in the delivery of general primary care medical services in a community healthcare setting. Under the general supervision of the Lead Physician, the PdA is responsible for patient intake and flow, administering injections, phlebotomy assistance, processing laboratory specimens and performing laboratory tests, maintaining the patients' medical charts in the Electronic Health Record, and assisting medical providers, and their clinic administrative special projects.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Registering and activating patients for MediCal and/or Family PACT insurance
- Assisting patients with documentation needed for MediCal / Family PACT insurance
- Prepare exam rooms before and after each examination according to clinic infection control procedures in a timely manner.
- Assist in patient flow management by timely rooming clients, maintaining awareness of exam room availability and timing.
- Take and record vital signs in the Electronic Health Record.
- Interact with clients in a respectful manner and maintain professional boundaries.
- Perform intake, record medical histories and perform client assessment including any initial assessments.
- Record client's chief complaint.
- Perform EKG, audiometry and other tests, as necessary.
- Assist practitioners during examinations, as needed.
- Perform immunization injections, phlebotomy assistance and basic in-clinic lab testing.
- Copy and file lab results, x-rays and other medical reports in patient medical records.
- Maintain adequate stocks of medical supplies and forms in clinic areas, checking supply levels and expiration dates regularly.
- Perform quality control testing of equipment, and record on logs as required.
- Check and record the temperature of the immunization refrigerator daily.
- Provide patient education and information as instructed by practitioners according to clinic protocols.
- Keep all clinic areas neat and clean according to requirements.
- Chart patient follow-up and other activities as needed.
- Cross-train at all Dream Youth Clinic sites.
- Assist practitioners with follow-up and referral activities.
- Attend team and staff meetings as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Lead Physician or Medical Director.
- Must be able to work on-site a minimum of 2 clinic days per week (part-time staff) and 4 clinic days per week ( full-time staff).
Clinical Administrative Special Project:
- Taking the lead on their clinic administrative special project (with support from the Lead Physician and Medical Director)
- Clinic Administrative Special Projects can include:
- Clinical Administration
- Data and Report Management
- Clinical Quality Improvement Management
- Electronic Medical Record administration
Competencies:
- Formal training as a Medical Assistant from a California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Approved school or at least three years of nurse practitioner or medical school education/training or documented equivalent job experience and training.
- High school, college graduate or Master level education. .
- Two years' experience working with underserved populations.
- Experience working with Black youth, youth of color, and gender expansive youth preferred.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Ability to perform or willingness to learn EKG and audiogram tests.
- Familiarity with Electronic Health Records.
- Experience working with Google Suite software.
- Proficiency in speaking, reading and writing English and bi-lingual language capacity preferred. .
- Ability to prioritize competing administrative and clinical work demands and tasks from clients and staff.
- Demonstrated ability and sensitivity working with a variety of people from low-income populations with diverse educational, lifestyle, ethnic and cultural origins.
- Willing to be trained on positive youth development, comprehensive family planning, abortion counseling, pregnancy options counseling, commercially sexual exploitation of youth, and other beneficial/emerging adolescent health topics.
- Proficiency in working with an urban underserved population.
- Demonstrated ability and sensitivity to working with youth affected by the juvenile justice and foster care systems, homelessness, pregnancy and parenting, sex trafficking, LGBTQ+ and other marginalized populations.
- Working knowledge of community health problems, including social and economic factors related to adolescent physical health preferred.
- Must be able to travel between Dream clinic sites (Oakland).
- Non-profit organization or community clinic experience preferred.
