Crane & Rigging Supervisor
Job Overview
The Crane & Rigging Supervisor will be responsible for overseeing all crane assembly and disassembly activities for Surespan's crawler crane fleet (100T–300T). This includes providing on‑site supervision and instruction to crews, coordinating with project teams, managing crane maintenance, inspection, and certification programs, and ensuring all rigging and lifting operations are compliant with Surespan procedures and applicable WorkSafeBC regulations. This position is based out of Surespan's Yard in Langley, BC and requires regular travel to project sites throughout Western Canada and the Territories.
Responsibilities and Duties
Crane & Rigging Operations
- Supervise all crane assembly and disassembly activities, ensuring compliance with manufacturer procedures, engineered lift plans, and WorkSafeBC regulatory requirements.
- Organize, delegate, and liaise with operators, rigging crews, supervisory personnel, and project teams to ensure safe and efficient crane setups and takedowns.
- Ensure risks related to crane configuration, ground bearing capacity, boom assembly, lifting components, and rigging selection are properly anticipated, assessed, and mitigated.
Maintenance, Inspection & Certification Program
- Manage the crane maintenance, inspection, and certification program, ensuring all crawler cranes, rigging gear, and below‑the‑hook devices remain in safe working order.
- Coordinate with internal mechanics and external service providers to ensure timely repairs, annual certifications, NDT inspections, and OEM‑required maintenance.
- Ensure cranes are physically maintained to a clean and serviceable condition presenting a professional image of the Surespan when being transported or on the job.
- Review maintenance reports, logbooks, and inspection documentation; ensure timely completion and sign‑off.
Rigging & Lift Planning
- Coordinate with Operations to ensure proper deployment of cranes, rigging gear, and lifting equipment to project sites.
- Develop or review lift plans including rigging selection, sling angles, WLL compliance, load paths, and ground preparation requirements.
- Set the standards for the conduct pre‑lift briefings at Surespan, enforce standardized lift procedures, and ensure correct hand signals and communication protocols are used.
Crane & Equipment Logistics
- Manage transportation of crane components, counterweights, mats, and tooling to and from project sites while maintaining strong relationships with transport service providers.
- Coordinate rentals or leased lifting equipment when required and ensure compliance with procurement procedures.
Rigging Gear & Inventory Control
- Manage inventory of rigging gear, lifting equipment, and specialized tools; ensure inspection, repair, certification, storage, and traceability.
- Ensure Superintendents and crews comply with standardized procedures for rigging procurement and control.
Crew Competency, Training & Supervision
- Support and mentor crane operators, apprentices, and riggers in alignment with BC Crane Safety standards and Surespan's training programs.
- Provide training in crane and rigging procedures, safe work practices, hazard identification, and company policies.
- Ensure external service providers operate within approved budgets and agreed‑upon rates.
Safety, Compliance & Incident Management
- Work with the Safety Division to maintain a safe work environment during crane assembly, disassembly, and lifting operations.
- Assist in or conduct investigations relating to crane incidents, equipment damages, or rigging deficiencies; prepare detailed reports and support corrective actions.
- Ensure timely reporting of insurance‑related matters including equipment additions/removals, documentation for claims, and annual insurance reviews.
General Responsibilities
- Maintain high housekeeping standards in yard and crane assembly areas.
- Ensure Surespan decals and identification are properly applied to all cranes and lifting equipment.
- Remain current with crane and rigging industry standards, regulations, and best practices.
- Additional duties may be assigned at the discretion of the President.
Skills/Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience working with crawler cranes, rigging, lift planning, or heavy industrial construction.
- Experience supervising crane assembly/disassembly activities for lattice boom crawlers (100T–300T).
- BC Crane Safety registration; Level A or Red Seal Mobile Crane Operator certification preferred.
- Maintain at a minimum a valid BC Class 5 Driver's License and clean drivers abstract. A Class 1 Driver's License would be an asset.
- Strong understanding of WorkSafeBC requirements (Part 14 – Cranes & Hoists, Part 15 – Rigging) and OEM procedures.
- Proficient in MS Office (Excel emphasis); comfortable learning new systems and lift‑planning tools.
- Strong rigging knowledge including sling angle calculations, load charts, ground bearing assessments, and critical lift procedures.
- Ability to lift and carry loads up to 25 lbs.
- Strong critical thinking, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to instruct and guide field crews.
- Self‑motivated, organized, and capable of managing multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Flexibility with work hours during busy field seasons to support project schedules.
- Positive attitude, strong teamwork values, and willingness to take on additional tasks as needed.
