Job Description
Halifax Public Libraries invites INTERNAL and EXTERNAL applications for part-time, permanent Library Clerk position at the Halifax Central Library. 
This is a unionized position. Preference will be given to internal applicants from the NSUPE Local 14 bargaining unit.

Halifax Central Library blends the best of traditional library services with new technology and innovative spaces, making it a vital center for learning and culture. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
In this job, you will assist with creating a positive customer experience by supporting our goal of creating vibrant spaces and being a resource for everyone. Some of the things you will love about this job:
  • You keep things running smoothly by moving library materials and getting them to the shelves.
  • You keep the shelves and library spaces in order and tidy.
  • You will get our program rooms ready for our exciting events and activities.
  • You provide excellent customer service, giving directions to customers within the library and directing customers to staff for assistance.

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?
Education & Experience:
  • Completion of Grade 10 is required
Requirements:
  • Read and write English.
  • Numerical and alphabetical skills.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to lift, pull, and push objects up to 35 lbs.
Assets:
  • Previous work experience in a library
  • Familiarity with Dewey Decimal system
Physical and Sensory Demands:
  • Repetitive motions including reaching, gripping, crouching/kneeling to handle materials.
  • Frequent moderate exertion including: walking, lifting, pulling, and pushing  (up to 35 lbs) on a daily basis.
  • Focus and attention to detail.
  • Frequent need for recognizing small print.

Week 1 & 2
Sun: 10:00am-6:00pm
Mon: 8:00am-1:00pm*
Tues: 8:00am-1:00pm*
Thurs: 5:00pm-9:00pm
**as per the collective agreement, employees are entitled to an unpaid meal break of a maximum one-half (1/2) hour.
