Job Description: Part-Time Firefighter
Position Title: Part-Time Firefighter
Reports To: Captain (Day Operations Supervisor) / Fire Chief (or designee)
Position Summary:
The Part-Time Firefighter supports the Friendswood Volunteer Fire Department (FVFD) by providing emergency response services, station maintenance, and operational readiness during assigned weekday shifts. This position assists in fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials response, and emergency medical incidents while maintaining a high level of professionalism and safety.
Part-Time Firefighters work closely with volunteer and paid staff to ensure effective and coordinated response to emergencies. This position requires teamwork, sound judgment, and a strong commitment to the FVFD's mission of protecting lives and property through service, integrity, and excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
Emergency Response & Operations
- Responds to fires, medical calls, rescues, hazardous materials releases, and other emergencies.
- Performs firefighting duties including hose deployment, ventilation, salvage, overhaul, and equipment operation.
- Provides patient care at the EMT or Paramedic level under established medical protocols.
- Assists in vehicle extrication, technical rescue, and specialized operations.
- Operates fire apparatus and support vehicles safely and efficiently.
- Follows direction of the Incident Commander or company officer during operations.
Training & Preparedness
- Participates in scheduled drills, continuing education, and skill maintenance training.
- Completes daily readiness checks of apparatus, tools, and PPE.
- Maintains personal fitness and equipment proficiency.
- Supports integrated training with volunteers and partner agencies.
Station & Administrative Duties
- Performs general station upkeep and equipment maintenance.
- Completes reports, logs, and documentation related to incidents and training.
- Assists with public education and community engagement events.
- Communicates effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
Minimum Qualifications / Certifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Basic Firefighter Certification
- Texas DSHS EMT certification
- NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800 required
- Valid Texas Class B (exempt) Driver's License
- Minimum two (2) years of structural firefighting experience (Volunteer or Combination Department preferred)
- Clear criminal history (no Class B offenses or higher)
Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to perform firefighting, rescue, and EMS duties safely and efficiently
- Strong knowledge of firefighting tactics, ICS, and apparatus operations
- Effective communicator with strong teamwork and problem-solving skills
- Computer proficiency with basic report entry and training systems
- Commitment to professional growth and continuous improvement
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Duties performed in emergency, training, and administrative settings
- Requires standing, walking, climbing, bending, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs.
- Exposure to heat, cold, smoke, hazardous substances, and infectious materials
- Must meet medical and fitness standards (NFPA 1582)
- Subject to physical exam, drug screening, and background check
- Typical schedule: Weekdays between 7:30AM – 5:30 PM, with potential call-back during emergencies
