The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a Transportation Engineer 2 to lead our Right of Way (R/W) team in preparing records, surveys, and permits essential to the design, construction, and right of way process. This role plays a key part in advancing WSDOT's mission to provide safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation options that support communities and economic growth. The successful candidate will foster a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative work environment while delivering high-quality engineering documentation and support.

What to Expect

The incumbent may be required to work flexible hours, which may include overtime, nights, weekends, and/or split shifts, depending on business needs.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Transportation Engineer 2 will:

  • Lead the Right of Way (R/W) Plans team in preparing and drafting R/W Plans, Records of Survey, Monumentation Maps, Permits to Destroy Monuments, and related documents using WSDOT software (e.g., MicroStation, Inroads).
  • Prepare and respond to document requests from start to finish, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Train team members, WSDOT staff, and consultants on Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) software to support successful project delivery.
  • Manage and organize CAD files, assisting in resolving related issues to maintain efficient workflows.
  • Research deeds, surveys, and other records to gather and calculate data for parcels and alignments, review geometry for accuracy, and archive results in designated systems.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Technical Knowledge: Knowledge of civil engineering principles, land surveying practices, Right of Way (R/W) plan development, survey data processing, and CAD applications through experience and/or education.
  • Technical Skills: Ability to perform land surveying, prepare R/W plans, process survey data, and apply CAD software for engineering, design, and R/W documentation tasks.
  • Problem-Solving and Application: Ability to apply technical knowledge of surveying, design, and R/W plan development to support transportation projects and resolve field or design-related issues effectively.
  • Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
  • Service-Oriented: Demonstrates a willingness to take action to meet the needs of others.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Mathematics and Surveying Knowledge: Strong knowledge of mathematics, geometry, trigonometry, and surveying practices.
  • Construction Knowledge and Safety Practices: Understands construction methods and demonstrates the ability to work safely on a construction site.
  • Independent and Team-Based Work Skills: Ability to work both independently and collaboratively to complete survey requests and prepare R/W documents from start to finish.
  • Professional Certification: Washington State Land Surveyor In-Training (LSIT) Certificate or equivalent certification from another state.

  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
