Summary

The Inventory Technician supports the daily operations of the Materials Management department by receiving, storing, distributing, and maintaining accurate inventory of hospital supplies and equipment. This role ensures that all clinical and non-clinical departments receive the supplies they need in a timely and efficient manner. The technician maintains organized storage areas, monitors par levels, and follows established procedures to support operational efficiency, patient safety, and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities

Inventory Control & Stock Management

  • Perform routine and scheduled cycle counts to verify inventory accuracy.
  • Maintain par levels in clinical units, central supply, and designated storage areas.
  • Track usage patterns and notify leadership of shortages, overstock, or supply concerns.
  • Rotate inventory according to FIFO/FEFO to prevent expiration or waste.
  • Remove expired, damaged, or recalled items and document accordingly.

Receiving & Distribution

  • Receive incoming deliveries and verify items against purchase orders, packing slips, and invoice documentation.
  • Inspect shipments for damage or discrepancies and communication issues promptly.
  • Enter receipts into the inventory system and route documentation to Purchasing/Finance as required.
  • Deliver supplies, equipment, and materials to requesting departments throughout the hospital and clinics.
  • Assist with coordinating returns, exchanges, and backorders with vendors.

Materials Management Operations

  • Maintain clean, organized, and compliant storage areas, ensuring all items are properly labeled and accessible.
  • Assist in preparing supply carts, crash carts, and specialty kits based on departmental needs.
  • Support the department's inventory management system by updating item records, bin locations, and par levels.
  • Collaborate with clinical and non-clinical staff to ensure timely and accurate fulfillment of supply requests.

Regulatory & Safety Compliance

  • Follow all hospital policies and regulatory guidelines (CMS, Joint Commission, OSHA, etc.).
  • Ensure proper storage conditions, including temperature-sensitive or sterile items as applicable.
  • Participate in audit activities and compliance checks as needed.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Complete all required logs, forms, and electronic records efficiently and accurately.
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, or year-end inventory counts and reconciliation.
  • Provide input to the Director of Materials Management on cost savings, supply trends, and operational improvements.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • One year of experience in inventory, warehouse, supply chain, or materials management preferred (healthcare setting strongly preferred).
  • Basic computer skills; familiarity with inventory or MMIS systems desirable.
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 40–50 lbs; frequent standing, walking, and bending.
  • Valid driver's license may be required if role includes clinic supply delivery.

  • Hospital materials management environment with exposure to supply rooms, loading docks, carts, and equipment.
  • Occasional exposure to temperature-controlled storage areas.
  • Requires adherence to safety and infection-control standards.
