The Senior Engineer, Naval Architecture, is responsible for carrying out naval architecture assignments on new construction and repair projects at Seaspan Shipyards. Under the direction of the Manager, Naval Architecture, the Senior Engineer, Naval Architecture, participates in all phases of new construction design projects, including requirements decomposition, design preparations, supporting analysis, material selection and specification, engineering execution, and engineering close-out activities.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.

What you'll do  

  • Provides engineering and design expertise in assigned areas of Naval Architecture by preparing and reviewing design and calculation packages to ensure contract design requirements are met.
  • Provides engineering and design expertise in assigned areas of structural design by preparing and reviewing design and calculation packages to ensure contract design requirements are met.
  • Supports the Manager, Naval Architecture, by providing mentorship and oversight to other junior engineers, designers, or subcontractors in the areas of naval architecture and structural design.
  • Develops and/or reviews design documents for fisheries, icebreaking, and naval replenishment vessels to achieve customer, Classification Society, and regulatory approval.
  • Performs trade studies, both formal and informal, to identify the most cost-effective solutions to engineering problems and stay within material budgets for assigned systems. Looks for opportunities to lower material costs below the budget.
  • Develops material specifications and bills of material in accordance with Seaspan material strategies and customer requirements.
  • Represents the company to the industry to develop an understanding of Seaspan's involvement in FFR and continue to build our reputation.

What you'll bring

  • Bachelor's Degree in Naval Architecture is required.
  • 10 or more years of post-secondary experience working in Naval Architecture and Structural Design.
  • Professional Engineering designation in the Province of British Columbia.
  • Previous shipyard experience would be an asset.
  • Experience working with a diverse project team is considered an asset.
  • Expert knowledge of stability and weight calculations.
  • Expert knowledge of resistance and powering calculations.
  • Knowledge of seakeeping calculations.
  • Expert knowledge of structural design, including a detailed understanding of structural connections and production best practices.
  • Knowledge of the following ship types is considered a valuable asset: research vessels, fishing vessels, icebreakers, and naval auxiliary vessels.
  • Knowledge of noise predictions and attenuation best practices.
  • Knowledge of icebreaker structures.
  • Exhibited ability to work independently to develop solutions to complex technical problems.
  • Above-average analytical skills to gather, analyze, or synthesize data, confirming its accuracy and sufficiency as a key part of the overall analysis or synthesis process.
  • Strong technical writing skills involve the ability to create and present clear, detailed technical specifications, procedures, and reports.
  • Knowledge of MRP, purchasing, and management systems is a plus.
  • Solid understanding of ShipConstructor and ACAD software, document control systems, and databases is preferred.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Above-average communication skills, including written, verbal, listening, and presentation, are required.
  • Availability and willingness to travel to locations and at the frequency the employer deems necessary or desirable to meet business needs.
  • Committed to a high standard of safety and able to follow all safety laws and all of the employer's safety policies and rules.
  • Exercise discernment and make decisions in a manner consistent with the integral job functions.
  • Advanced working knowledge of basic Microsoft Office 2010 software suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).

The estimated salary for this position is $119,700 - $146,300. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors, including the successful Candidate's skill set and experience, the position's location, and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company's sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
