Location
This position is required to work in person at the RPF Operations Centre, 3330 Harvester Road, Burlington, Ontario. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands.
Position Overview
Reporting to the Supervisor of Horticulture, Gardener/Landscapers are responsible for preparing and maintaining horticultural displays in City parks and supporting general parks maintenance activities throughout Burlington.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will be responsible for the following key duties:
Lead and train crew members on the safe operation of equipment and tools and ensure adherence to safe work procedures while maintaining horticultural displays.
Prepare, install, maintain, and remove plantings, including watering, applying soil amendments and fertilizers, weeding, and pruning.
Operate handheld equipment and tools used for grass cutting, sports field maintenance, and general park maintenance activities.
Perform minor adjustments, routine upkeep, and day-to-day maintenance on equipment and tools used for horticultural and park maintenance tasks.
Collect litter and empty garbage receptacles in parks, playgrounds, parking lots, roadsides, and other public spaces.
Open, close, inspect, clean, and disinfect public washroom facilities.
Participate in loose-leaf collection and winter control operations.
Complete administrative tasks accurately and on time, including daily activity sheets, training documentation, and other required records.
Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Highway Traffic Act, and all applicable federal, provincial, and City regulations, policies, and procedures.
Requirements
You have completed a two-year post-secondary certificate or diploma in horticulture or related field, paired with one to two years of hands-on gardening or landscaping experience. An equivalent blend of education and experience may also be accepted. You also bring sound judgment, solid problem-solving skills, and a commitment to excellent customer service.
Shift work will be required depending on time of year. This position may require occasional travel between sites and/or City facilities.
A valid Class G driver's licence is required with an acceptable driver's abstract (no more than three (3) driving related convictions or an accumulation of no more than three (3) demerit points in the previous three (3) years prior to the date of hire).
