Lead Software Engineer

A rapidly growing healthcare AI startup is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to fully own and drive the development of its flagship web platform. This role is highly hands-on and ideal for an engineer who wants to build foundational product experiences from scratch while directly influencing technical vision, engineering culture, and product velocity.

As the first senior engineering hire, you will collaborate closely with users, product leadership, and the founding team—working end-to-end from ideation and architecture to implementation, deployment, and iteration. You will report directly to the CEO, an experienced multi-time founder in the healthtech space, and work alongside a deeply technical AI group including engineers and PhDs from top institutions.

What You'll Do

• Own the full product lifecycle for the core web platform—from concept to production.
• Work closely with customers to understand their needs and translate insights into intuitive, reliable product experiences.
• Design and build scalable full-stack features using Ruby on Rails and Heroku.
• Establish engineering best practices for quality, velocity, and maintainability.
• Collaborate with a small, senior team of data scientists and data engineers focused on AI safety, model evaluation, and healthcare workflows.
• Shape the technical roadmap, architecture, and engineering culture at an early stage.
• Contribute to a mission-driven platform focused on responsible, safe, and compliant AI adoption in healthcare.

Required Experience

• 5+ years of full-stack engineering experience.
• Strong proficiency with
  Ruby on Rails
  and deployment on
  Heroku
  .
• Experience building and shipping production-quality web applications end-to-end.
• Ability to work autonomously in fast-paced, iterative environments.
• Comfort collaborating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Experience

• Background working in startups or small, high-velocity engineering teams.
• Experience with healthcare, compliance-heavy industries, or AI/ML workflows.
• Strong product instincts and user empathy.
• Interest in shaping engineering culture and mentoring future hires.
