About Us
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol's primary mission is to reduce collisions and make the highways of North Carolina as safe as possible. The NCSHP has more than 1,600 troopers who cover nearly 80,000 miles of North Carolina roadways, more than any other state except Texas. In addition to enforcing the state's traffic laws, state troopers also guide traffic during hurricane evacuations, re-route traffic around hazardous chemical spills, and they stand ready should any act of terrorism occur. Description of Work
This position will involve the construction, relocation, maintenance and repair of secondary underground electric distribution lines and systems. Position assists in the installation and maintenance of up to 350KW stand-by generators, switch gear, transformers, and other components of an electrical system and construct extension or replacement lines to the existing system as they relate to VIPER sites statewide. Work is performed under the general supervision of a VIPER Network Engineer (Facilities Team Supervisor) and is reviewed by NC DOI inspections. Position provides preventative and corrective maintenance on stand-by and emergency generators within the defined VIPER maintenance schedule. A major part of this job is the repair and maintenance of backup emergency power generators/systems and the employee is expected to develop extensive knowledge in this area. This job requires flexibility to work long hours. Work is normally accomplished alone but may require employee to work with others to complete tasks as needed. Job requires that employee work with vendors to obtain supplies and repair parts as needed.

Considerable knowledge of the standard practices and methods of the electrical trade.
- Skill in the use and care of tools of the trade.
- Ability to locate and correct defects in electrical systems and equipment.
- Ability to read and work from blueprints and sketches.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
Management Preferences (Optional): These skills are not required but managers may choose to interview/select applicants who demonstrate
- Experience in working with back-up power generators.
- Experience/knowledge in working with 3-phase power.
Must have or be able to acquire valid North Carolina Driver's License

This section has the responsibility of managing the operation of the State's Voice Interoperability Plan for Emergency Responders (VIPER), a Statewide communications system for the purpose of providing digital voice communication for the members of the N.C. State Highway Patrol (NCSHP), Criminal Justice Information Network (CJIN), and other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and two (2) years of experience in the performance of the full range of journey level tasks associated with two (2) or more highly complex mechanical or building trades; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualification May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.
