About The Role

Hatch is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Backend Engineer to join its dynamic engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and scaling the backend systems that power Hatch's connected sleep ecosystem, including mobile applications and IoT-enabled devices. You will work with technologies such as Java, Python, Spring Boot, and AWS to build RESTful APIs, optimize system performance, and ensure the reliability and security of our backend infrastructure. As a key technical leader, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including Mobile, Embedded, and Product to define best practices, guide architectural decisions, and mentor other engineers. Your contributions will directly impact the scalability, robustness, and user experience of Hatch's products, helping millions of users achieve better sleep and overall well-being.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in backend engineering with expertise in Java (21+) and Spring Boot
• Proficiency in Python backend services
• Experience designing and building scalable RESTful JSON APIs
• Strong understanding of distributed systems and cloud infrastructure, particularly AWS
• Familiarity with Groovy, MySQL, and infrastructure/monitoring tools such as Ansible, Jenkins, ELK, Graphite, Docker
• Experience with automation, continuous deployment, and automated testing practices
• Excellent problem-solving skills and a focus on simplicity and elegance in code
• Strong judgment, humility, and ability to collaborate effectively within a team
• Effective communication skills to explain complex technical concepts clearly
• Experience with IoT systems, MQTT, connected hardware, or AI integrations is a plus

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services that support Hatch's mobile apps and IoT devices
• Lead architecture discussions and define best practices for backend systems
• Build and optimize RESTful APIs, ensuring high performance and scalability
• Collaborate with Mobile, Embedded, and Product teams to deliver seamless user experiences
• Mentor junior engineers and promote engineering excellence within the team
• Propose and lead initiatives for system refactors and large-scale improvements
• Enhance system observability using tools like Graphite, ELK, and other monitoring solutions
• Own critical backend components such as device communication, registration/auth flows, and routine scheduling
• Drive innovation by incorporating AI tools and automation into backend workflows
• Participate in troubleshooting, incident response, and continuous improvement efforts
