SCOPE
Reporting to the Director, Research and Business Development, Office of Research, with dotted line reporting to Faculty Associate Dean(s), Research, the incumbent guides and advises individuals and teams of faculty members in developing research funding strategies by identifying relevant funding sources and opportunities. The incumbent is a point of contact, resource and guide to researchers and the Faculty Associate Dean(s), Research, and liaises with the business development team, external collaborators, institutions, and granting agencies. In consultation with the Director, Research and Business Development, and Associate Dean(s), Research, the incumbent provides proactive and timely action, appropriate problem-solving, and follow-up during the funding development and application process. The incumbent participates in special projects and/or initiatives for the Office of the Vice President, Research & Graduate Studies (OVPRGS)/Office of Research (OOR) as determined by the Associate Vice-President, Development and Outreach and/or the Director.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Strategize with researchers to develop customized research funding plans for the short and long term. Provide researchers with advice and support in their funding applications and proposal development. Coordinate, advise on, and oversee a variety of activities related to funding competitions.
• Work with and advise researchers in order to develop grant applications for funding agencies. Advise researchers on how to leverage complementary funding opportunities. Support applicants throughout the development and submission process, including writing, reviewing and editing text, assisting with budget development and verification, coordinating inter-institutional collaborations and liaising with external partners.
• Acquire and maintain in-depth knowledge of rapidly changing existing funding programs, new programs and emerging funding bodies, and disseminate information to faculty members.
• In collaboration with the Faculty Associate Dean(s), Research, propose and develop strategies that actively promote research success at the Faculty level. Develop in-depth knowledge of Faculty research capacity including faculty members' research strengths and expertise, and maintain a comprehensive knowledge of the strategic priorities for research at the institutional and Faculty levels.
• Assist OOR/OVPRGS senior staff in developing and coordinating large-scale strategic and institutional research initiatives.
• Assist with faculty mentorship programs, inter-peer review committees, and other initiatives to help build and support research capacity.
• Collaborate with Analyst, Research Data to analyze funding competition results and make recommendations to researchers, Faculty Associate Dean(s), Research, and the OOR/OVPRGS team to improve the quality, quantity, and chances of future success in research funding opportunities. Maintain an awareness of research-related data resources. Make process changes designed to increase overall success rates.
• Facilitate and/or participate in workshops and networking events relevant to primary responsibilities.
• Participate in the development, communication and implementation of policies and procedures related to research development and administration.
• Deliver on special mandates and perform other duties in support of the unit.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor's degree in a field related to the primary responsibilities and two to four years of relevant work experience including grant writing.
• Master's degree in a field related to primary responsibilities is an asset.
• Strong knowledge of the research funding environment and mechanisms in Québec and Canada, and good knowledge of international funding programs.
• Very good knowledge (Level 5) of spoken and written English in order to write, analyze and provide critical feedback to maintain effective communication with faculty members, external research partners, and internal units; very good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written French in order to give feedback on grants, communicate with funding agencies and external partners and handle requests and communication in writing.
• Good knowledge (Intermediate level) of Word, Excel and PowerPoint (to create documents, spreadsheets, budgets and presentations).
• Excellent organizational and analytical skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including confidence, tact, discretion and judgment to work effectively with academic researchers, corporate contacts, government representatives, and senior administrators.
• Proactive and self-directed, strong problem-solving skills with proven ability to work in a fast-paced service-oriented environment.
• Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, plan processes and manage projects within established deadlines and parameters.
