Human Resources & Safety Partner (Alberta + BC)

Location: Medicine Hat, AB (Head Office)
Company: Plainsman Clays Ltd.
Reports to: President & General Manager

About Plainsman Clays

Plainsman Clays Ltd. is a long-established Canadian clay mining and processing company with a rapidly expanding retail and commercial footprint. With operations in Alberta and British Columbia — including three retail locations — we are modernizing our systems, investing in new product lines, and building a culture rooted in curiosity, craftsmanship, continuous improvement, and community.

As we grow, we're looking for an HR professional who can bring stability, structure, and energy to our people practices across both provinces.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Human Resources & Occupational Health & Safety Partner who is comfortable working across two provinces (AB + BC), supporting three retail locations, and partnering closely with both plant operations and our leadership team.

This is a uniquely broad role — touching HR, safety, compliance, retail support, workforce planning, and culture. We know the "perfect candidate" may not exist, so we deeply value attitude, curiosity, adaptability, and high energy. If you love learning, enjoy variety, and want to build modern programs from the ground up, this could be a great fit.

Key Responsibilities

Human Resources (60–70%)

Multi-Province HR (AB + BC)

  • Lead HR support for all Plainsman operations in Alberta and British Columbia.
  • Interpret and apply provincial employment standards for both AB and BC.
  • Support managers and employees through HR questions, coaching, and problem-solving.

Retail HR Support (3 Locations)

  • Partner with retail managers on staffing, scheduling, onboarding, and performance.
  • Support employee relations, job descriptions, training, and policy updates across all stores.

Core HR Functions

  • Coordinate recruitment, onboarding, and employee lifecycle processes.
  • Administer benefits (Manulife) and payroll-related tasks (Payworks) in partnership with Finance.
  • Maintain accurate employee files, HR metrics, training logs, certifications, and attendance.
  • Contribute to culture-building — communication, engagement, values alignment, and leadership development.

Labour Relations (Nice to Have)

  • Support or liaise on union-related matters if and when needed.
  • Assist with interpretation of collective agreements (where applicable).

Health, Safety & Environment (30–40%)

Multi-Province Safety (AB + BC)

  • Ensure compliance with OHS legislation for both Alberta and British Columbia.
  • Maintain safety programs, policies, and training applicable to both provinces.

Operational Safety

  • Conduct hazard assessments, inspections, toolbox talks, and incident investigations.
  • Manage WCB for two provinces, including return-to-work and modified duties.
  • Track corrective actions, safety metrics, and near-miss reporting.
  • Partner with plant and retail managers to maintain a proactive safety culture.

Qualifications

We understand this is a unique role. The following are strong assets, not rigid requirements:

Education / Credentials

  • Diploma or degree in Human Resources, Business, Occupational Health & Safety, or related field.
  • OHS coursework, minor, or certificate is an asset.
  • CPHR, NCSO, CRSP, or equivalent designations considered beneficial.

Experience

  • HR generalist experience in Alberta and/or BC.
  • Knowledge of Employment Standards, OHS Code, WCB processes in both provinces.
  • Experience supporting retail teams or multi-site environments is an advantage.
  • Exposure to labour relations or unionized environments (nice to have).
  • Familiarity with Payworks, Manulife benefits administration, or similar systems.
  • Experience in manufacturing, industrial, or resource-based industries is a plus.

The Person Who Will Thrive in This Role

You don't need to check every box — what matters most is:

  • A great attitude and willingness to learn.
  • Strong communication and people skills.
  • High energy, confidence, and approachability.
  • Curiosity and comfort with building new processes.
  • Ability to work with everyone from plant operators to senior leadership.
  • A pragmatic, roll-up-your-sleeves style — not just a policy writer.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary and benefits.
  • Professional development, training, and certification support.
  • A chance to build modern HR and Safety systems during a time of transformation.
  • A stable, community-rooted company with a supportive leadership team.
  • The opportunity to make a visible impact across multiple business units.
