The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has openings for a Engineering summer student in the Engineering Division. This student opportunity is for a period from May 4, 2026, to August 28, 2026.
Job description
The Chatham-Kent Engineering Division is responsible for the delivery of municipal infrastructure projects that serve both existing communities, and future development. The division is responsible for providing the overall strategic planning, replacement, rehabilitation and management of the Municipality's core assets including roads, bridges, culverts, sidewalks, parking lots, and stormwater infrastructure. The Engineering Student will have the opportunity to work alongside engineering staff to learn the different aspects of municipal engineering design, construction, inspection, and data management. The Engineering Student will assist the Engineering Division's technical team with related assignments and support in the team's delivery of capital infrastructure planning and implementation.
Essential responsibilities
- Demonstrate Chatham-Kent's core values and competencies
- Assist the Engineering Division's technical staff with varying types of engineering related assignments, including:
- Field surveying
- AutoCAD work completing sketches and drawings
- Developing cost estimates
- Evaluating and updating infrastructure needs databases for Municipal assets
- Field inspections of projects under the supervision of Engineering staff
- Support in the preparation of payment certificates
- Support in the preparation of procurements
- Support in hydrology/modelling
- Parking lot layouts
- Completing and updating traffic counts
- Inputting data into traffic collision system software
- Updating inventory of pavement markings and traffic signal infrastructure
- Supporting the drainage team in updating asset databases
- Work both indoors and outdoors, with occasional weekend hours
Essential qualifications
- To qualify for this summer student position, students must currently be enrolled in school full-time for the 2025/2026 winter term (normally ending April, May or June) and/or returning to school full-time in the 2026 fall term (normally starting in August or September)
- Currently be enrolled in a college diploma or university degree program in Civil Engineering or related program
- Preference will be given to students enrolled in their second or third year of a Civil Engineering or related program
- Demonstrated knowledge of civil infrastructure design and construction is considered an asset
- Knowledge of in AutoCAD and/or ESRI ArcGIS is considered an asset
- Experience with total station, GPS, or other survey equipment
- Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
- Ability to work individually as well as part of a team
- Ability to work independently
- Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) (or similar software programs)
Work environment/hours of work
This position works both indoors and outdoors.
Driver's licence/vehicle requirements
Because of the responsibilities, this position requires the successful candidate to have a valid class G or G2 Ontario driver's licence; a driver's abstract will be conducted by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. An acceptable driver's abstract will: be an original document and current (within the previous thirty (30) days); have no more than four (4) demerit points; have no more than two (2) convictions for the same offence; have no criminal code convictions; have no 'non-medical or administrative' license suspension in the preceding three (3) years; because this position may be required to drive their own vehicle, a reliable vehicle is also required.

Benefits
This student position has an hourly range of $19.06 to $21.12 and will receive vacation and statutory benefits in accordance with Employment Standards Act.
