Position Summary
The Andolfatto lab group studies the evolutionary processes shaping genome evolution and the genetic mechanisms underlying adaptations and species-specific traits. To do this, they generate and analyze innovative experimental data by bringing together aspects of functional/phylo/population-genomics, ecology, biochemistry and molecular genetics and employ a wide variety of model and non-model organisms, including Drosophila, butterflies and other insects, corals, fish, reptiles and amphibians.
Responsibilities
Under the Supervision of the PI, the incumbent will perform the following duties:
- Under the direction of the PI: Assist in molecular biology research including nucleic acid extractions, PCR, sequencing, DNA cloning and site-directed mutagenesis, cell culture (maintenance, transfection and assays), preparing next-generation sequencing libraries for RNA and DNA (50% time).
- Under the direction of the PI: Maintain Drosophila stocks, assist in performing genetic crosses with a variety of Drosophila species and carrying out genetic screens, biochemical and phenotypic assays (30% time).
- Assist in general lab organization and maintenance (20% time)
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required in a scientific discipline, such as biology or a related field (biochemistry, molecular biology, and genetics). One year of experience in a research environment, laboratory setting, and familiarity with basic molecular biology techniques such as pipetting, cloning, PCR, microbiology, etc. Ability to work independently as well as with a team. Good organization skills, keep good records and comfort with multi-tasking.
