This role will perform machinist's work using manual lathe and milling and grinding equipment which requires comprehensive knowledge of machining techniques and procedures. Must have a thorough knowledge of machine functions and reading drawings. Exercises judgment and use skills to attain high accuracy needed to conform to the most demanding specifications. Requires minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform small and large set-ups and operate a variety of shop machine tools to fabricate metal and non-metal parts
- Applies extensive knowledge of mechanics, advanced mathematics, including trigonometry metal properties, layout and machine procedures
- Studies specifications such as drawing, sketch or verbal description to determine dimensions and tolerance of piece to be machined, sequence of operations and tools, materials and machine required. Expected to be able to produce the most complex parts with the tightest tolerances with minimal supervision.
- Attaches rigging and operates overhead crane and/or use lift truck to move parts
- If necessary, measures, marks, and scribes' metal and non-metal stock to layout work pieces for machining
- Verifies dimensions using all available measuring instruments such as vernier, calipers, inside and outside micrometers, surface gauges, and center head protractors and dial indicators. Can routinely produce parts with tolerances of +/- .001'.
- Conforms to the requirements of the ISO 9000 systems
- Observes safety policies at all times
- Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of assigned area(s) and equipment per LEAN 6S
- Willingness to work overtime to meet delivery schedules
- Performs other duties and tasks as may be assigned
Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Two-year technical college degree in manufacturing technology or equivalent formal training program.
- Minimum of 10 years related machine shop experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
- Ability to read and understand complex drawings and all types of measuring instruments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
- Advanced knowledge of mathematics, including trigonometry.
REASONING ABILITY:
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
- Must be able to combine standing and walking 70% to 100% of a shift.
- Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds frequently and up to 55 pounds occasionally.
- Requirements include bending frequently, squatting, kneeling, climbing/balancing, reaching above shoulder level, and lifting from high/low positions occasionally; bending and pushing/pulling frequently.
- Repetitive use of hands would be for simple grasping, pushing, and pulling approximately up to 26 pounds of pressure, and fine manipulation.
