SUMMARY OF JOB:
Licensed Practical Nurses are responsible for assisting physicians with routine medical examinations, minor surgical procedures, the testing and treatment of patients and scheduling surgeries, x-rays, and other tests, answering telephone calls and ordering medications as directed by the physician.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Obtains accurate medical and family histories, chief complaint, current medications and allergy and drug reaction information from patients.
Assists physicians with minor procedures and surgeries.
Obtains vital statistics from patients (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respirations).
Monitors examinations rooms and ensures they are clean, organized, stocked and all equipment is in working order.
Explains treatments, medications and surgical procedures and insurance information to patients.
Triages patients' telephone calls and follows up as needed.
Completes medical work-ups on patients and ensures that the documentation is correct.
Administers medications to patients and gives injections as directed by the physician.
Is knowledgeable of and efficiently operates the Company's electronic medical records system without error.
10 Addresses and resolves medical insurance problems for patients.
Escorts patients to treatment rooms, x-ray, audiology, allergy, insurance or other appropriate departments.
Is responsible for patient teaching and for maintaining necessary pamphlets and medical information sheets for patients.
Schedules appointments, tests and surgeries for physicians and maintains and updates as needed.
Explains allergy testing procedures and results to patients as directed by the physician.
Knows and properly uses ICD-9-CM and CPT coding.
Performs x-rays as needed.
Is responsible for knowing the work schedule, observing work hours and maintaining a good attendance record. (See attached attendance and punctuality requirements.)
Attends in-service programs and maintains continuing education credits as directed or required for certification and licensure requirements.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with patients, employees, supervisors and the public. Exemplifies the Company's Five Star Program.
Follows all corporate and departmental policies and procedures and complies with the Employee Handbook.
Performs other tasks as needed or directed.

DEGREE OF SUPERVISION:
Performs duties under direct and indirect supervision.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
A. Accountability: Reports directly to the Otolaryngologist or ENT Clinical Coordinator.
B. Education or Training: Must be a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing and have a current license through the Board of Nursing.
C. Knowledge and Experience: Requires at least 1 year of work experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
D. Dexterity: Must have good manual dexterity for examining patients and operating equipment. Must be able to function in a clinic setting.
E. Accuracy: Must be able to transcribe information received from patients, including insurance coverage, social security and telephone numbers without error.
F. Physical Activity: Physical activity involves writing, keying, reaching, carrying, looking, listening, talking, bending, lifting, standing, walking, and sitting, resulting in light work.
G. Exertion Requirements: Medium - must be able to exert force to lift and carry from 20 to 50 pounds up to 10 feet occasionally, from 10 to 15 pounds of force up to 10 feet frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to walk, stand or sit to a significant degree depending on task requirements.
H. Working Conditions: Works in an office setting, which is well-lighted, ventilated and temperature regulated. Automobile travel may be required.
Must be able to concentrate on work tasks amidst distractions, such as noise, conversations and foot traffic.
Must be able to work in a confined area performing repetitive work for extended periods of time.
I. Hazards or Risks: May be exposed to blood borne pathogens.
J. Worker Characteristics: Must have responsible, ethical and professional manner with the ability to listen, learn, plan and organize. Must be able to communicate effectively with people of different races, sexes, ages and social classes.
K. Non-performance Requirements: Must maintain current license for Practical Nursing. Must have a valid driver's license or picture identification and a Social Security card or work permit.
