Purpose Statement
The job of Paraprofessional II - Special Education is to assist assigned teaching personnel in the supervision and instruction of special education students; performing classroom clerical tasks; and assisting students by meeting special health care needs and developing students' daily living and behavioral skills.
Per Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), interested applicants must be Highly Qualified to be considered for the position. This includes having a high school diploma or a recognized equivalent, along with one of the following three items: 1) completed at least two years at an accredited higher education institution (minimum 48 semester hours), or 2) obtained an associates (or higher) degree from an accredited higher education institution, or 3) satisfied a rigorous state or local assessment (Parapro Assessment). The higher education institution official transcripts or diploma, or a copy of the Paraprofessional Assessment must be provided with your application or upon a contingent offer of employment.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Must meet the Highly Qualified Requirements (ESSA)
- Pass a criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance
- Ability to administer first aid; apply assessment instruments; prepare and maintain accurate records;
- Ability to lead small groups; learn through play; communicate orally and in writing; and adhere to safety practices.
- Ability to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percent's, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others.
- Knowledgeable of age appropriate activities; and stages of child development; classroom management techniques; developing effective lesson plans; and planning and managing time effectively.
- Able to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job related equipment.
- Flexibility to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate physical education equipment and playground activities using standardized methods.
- Ability to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize job-related equipment.
- Ability to identify issues and create action plans for the purpose of problem solving, understanding of IEP; concepts for Special Education learning.
- Able to independent interpret guidelines; communicate with diverse groups; maintain confidentiality; set priorities; work as part of a team; work with frequent interruptions; adapt to changing work priorities; being attentive to detail;
- Ability to work under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget.
- Ability to utilize resources from other work units to meet goals and objectives.
Essential Functions
- Adapts classroom work under the direction of the teacher to provide a method to support and/or reinforce lesson plans.
- Administers tests and evaluations, under supervision of teacher (e.g. DRA, DIBELS, observational data for IEP goals, etc.) to monitor student progress.
- Assists other personnel as required and needed (e.g. instructors, site administration, other para professionals, etc.) to ensure an efficient and effective work environment.
- Confers with teachers to assist in evaluating student progress and/or implementing student objectives.
- Implements students' learning and behavior plans to meet students' social and behavioral interventions, health care plans, and/or ensuring compliance with IEPs and concepts for Special Education learning.
- Monitors individual students in a variety of settings (e.g. classroom, library, playground activities, field trip bus boarding and exiting, etc.) to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
- Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. scheduling, copying, data recording, etc.) to support the teacher and administrator.
- Provides a variety of activities, under direction of teacher (e.g. constructive play and learning in small groups; behavior modification activities, etc.) to ensure student learning and a positive classroom environment.
- Provides appropriate classroom intervention with students under the Teacher's direction (e.g. booster groups, individual instruction, small group instruction, etc.) to improve student learning and academic success.
- Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) to maintain the personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, administrative and/or school policies.
- Participates in various meetings to the receiving and/or conveying information.
Other Functions
Performs other duties as assigned to ensure student learning.
Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and some fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed in a generally hazard free environment.
