Lead Commercial Driver

Overview

The Lead Commercial Driver is responsible for operating a commercial frontload truck to collect, transport, and dispose of solid waste or recyclables from commercial customers. The Lead Driver provides guidance, training, and support to route drivers, ensuring safety, efficiency, and compliance with company policies and regulatory standards.

Essential Functions

• Safely operate a frontload refuse collection truck along assigned commercial routes.
• Lead and mentor a team of commercial route drivers; assist with route coverage, training, and performance feedback.
• Ensure proper loading, transportation, and unloading waste materials at designated facilities.
• Perform daily pre- and post-trip inspections of the vehicle to ensure operational safety and report maintenance issues.
• Monitor and maintain route efficiency; make recommendations for route adjustments and improvements.
• Serve as a liaison between drivers, dispatch, maintenance, and management.
• Enforce and model company safety standards and compliance with DOT, OSHA, and local regulations.
• Maintain accurate route logs, disposal tickets, and other required documentation.
• Provide exceptional customer service by addressing customer concerns or service issues promptly and professionally.
• Report vehicle malfunctions to the Maintenance & Equipment Manager
• Take emergency vehicle calls from other Commercial Drivers
• Help diagnose/troubleshoot vehicles, repair small items, if possible
• Assure all Commercial Drivers are out of the facility promptly in the morning
• Fill in for the Collection Operations Supervisor and Commercial Operations Supervisor when on vacation, sick, etc.
• Participate in safety meetings, training sessions, and company initiatives.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 21 years of age and legally eligible to work in the US
• Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 35 years of commercial driving experience, preferably in the waste management or transportation industry.
• Prior lead or supervisory experience preferred.
• Licenses/Certifications:
• Valid Class B (or Class A) Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with air brake endorsement.
• Clean driving record and ability to meet DOT requirements.
• Department of Transportation medical certificate
• Not prohibited from driving via FMCSA Clearinghouse
• Safe driving record
• Skills and Abilities:
• Strong leadership and communication skills.
• Knowledge of DOT regulations, safety practices, and vehicle operation.
• Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in all weather conditions.
• Strong problem-solving and time management abilities.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform repeated bending, lifting, and climbing.
• Work outdoors and be exposed to weather, odors, and waste materials.
• Operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently for extended periods.
