The incumbent of this position is responsible for clinical Social Work practice in the Women Veterans Program, a specialized treatment assignment with complex cases. Social Work Services are carried out in full accordance with specific program goals and broad objectives of the VA health care system. The role includes the promotion of Social Work services as a critical component of treatment. Additionally, the incumbent directs/coordinates clinical and psychosocial services and is accountable for the overall effectiveness of the services provided, modifying services to meet Veterans' treatment needs best and promoting efficient practice.

Duties for the position may include but are not limited to:

  • Employs, establishes, and maintains effective therapeutic relationships with veterans and/or their families who are experiencing medical, psychiatric, emotional, behavioral, and psychosocial problems.
  • Completes thorough psychosocial assessments, including psychosocial diagnosis and high-risk assessments, to determine the psychosocial functioning and needs of veterans and/or their families. The incumbent must be able to utilize this assessment in facilitating the veteran's maximum use of treatment for attainment of the highest level of independence post-discharge that is possible and practicable.
  • Has advanced knowledge and experience in use of complex medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures, and differential diagnosis. This includes acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries, common medications and their effects/side effects, and medical terminology. Knowledge needed in diagnosis spans the entire continuum of illness and disability experienced by veterans. In addition, many of the veterans have a diminished capacity to perform activities of daily living and experience role losses (e.g., parental, spouse, occupational, etc.) and bereavement.
  • Possesses expert knowledge and ability to independently implement specialized treatment modalities, provide educational classes, and/or provide counseling or psychotherapy for individuals, families, and groups. This requires judgment and skill in utilizing supportive, problem solving, or crisis intervention techniques

Work Schedule: Full Time; Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.; Subject to change to meet the needs of the Agency

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases

When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA
Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
