Malvern Behavioral Health is currently seeking a full time Nursing Supervisor at our upcoming Malvern Behavioral Health facility located at 3905 W. Ford Road Philadelphia, PA The Nurse Supervisor position will be assigned to oversee two adult psychiatric units as well as our current Malvern Treatment Center located in the same building. The Nursing Supervisor is a three night per week position, working from 7:00pm - 7:30am. Position Summary: To organize and administer individualized nursing care to patients. Provides standards of nursing care as directed by medical staff and in accordance with the multidisciplinary treatment plan objectives, policies, and procedures and the Nurse Practice Act. Serves as a resource to the direct care staff. Coordinates on-site response to incidents and errors that may occur. Provides support to the DON and/or Nurse Managers with staffing, staff education, and other activities as assigned. Provides direct care under the Registered Nurse Job description when necessary and/or assigned. Assists Director of Nursing in ensuring the quality and efficiency of nursing practice at Malvern Behavioral Health.

Summary of Essential Position Functions:

  • Monitor unit functioning through direct observation of patient care and milieu, and review of medical record documentation.
  • Observe staff and visitor interactions with patients to ensure they remain appropriate and respectful of the interests, strengths and needs of each patient. Address patient/family/agency concerns when they arise.
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of requirements related to medication management, seclusion and restraint, infection control, risk management, critical incidents, sentinel events, patient rights and ethical code of conduct.
  • Serve as a role model and leader, offering education and mentoring to the staff by maintaining an overall understanding of the programs and population specific treatment.
  • Ensure the treatment provided supports the treatment plan and physician orders.
  • Intervene in crisis situations and investigate incidents/events/process variances.
  • Oversee bed management by working closely with the Admissions department.
  • Oversee nursing services documentation to ensure it meets hospital policy
  • Support facility leadership through verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Maintain and adjust appropriate staffing patterns using patient acuity and unit variables including transfers and admissions. Maintain accurate records of call-offs and changes in staffing.
  • Ensure staffing sheets, environmental rounds and concurrent medical record audits are completed accurately and timely by each unit.
  • Coordinate response to incidents including codes and seclusion and restraint incidents, per facility protocols. Ensure Incident Reports and additional related paperwork are accurate and completely prior to the end of the shift.
  • Communicate with the DON and Nurse Manager to ensure all pertinent issues are "handed-off" for follow up/resolution.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by working as a staff nurse as needed, including working the unit or providing assessments (see Registered Nurse Essential Job Functions).
  • Establish and maintain therapeutic and safe environment through role modeling, supervision and feedback.
  • Ensure all patient valuables retained at the hospital during inpatient stay are recorded and stored per policy.
  • Ensure patients are discharged with all personal belongings, medication, prescriptions, discharge and referral information.
  • Comply with all National Patient Safety Goals and provide immediate feedback if non-compliance is identified.
  • Complete Charge Nurse duties when assigned including assignment sheet, verification that staff assignments are completed and providing ongoing supervision as needed to the assigned nursing staff.
  • Oversee all aspects of patient care and complete assignments as assigned by the Charge Nurse.
  • Perform ongoing observation of the patients and milieu to ensure active treatment is provided and patients are participating.
  • Respond appropriately and timely to patient requests.
  • Intervene appropriately with patients experiencing a behavioral crisis situation, i.e., suicidal, threatening behavior, elopement and/or other situations. Exhibit leadership by providing clear direction to the team and communication of the patient's status to the practitioner.

  • Provide support and direct assistance to patients who are unable to attend to their activities of daily living by assisting them with meals, daily grooming, ambulation and toileting as needed.
  • Participate with the treatment team in implementation of the individualized plan of care. Report factors that may impede successful accomplishment of the treatment plan to the Charge Nurse.
  • Provide patient educational information for identified learning needs.
  • Facilitate educational/activity groups as assigned or when indicated using approved materials. Recommend alternative activities based on patient functioning level and treatment plan.
  • Ensure compliance with infection control protocols and/or policies by patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Interact with patients, family members, external entities and internal staff professionally and respectfully.
  • Work collaboratively with all treatment team members to create a treatment environment that supports the facility's mission to provide exemplary patient care and customer service.
  • Act to preserve patient and family dignity and safety.

Education and/or Experience: Current licensure as a nurse in PA. Clinical experience in the treatment of behavioral health preferred. Current CPR certification. Knowledge of Joint Commission standards.

Technical/Computer Skills: Ability to work in a supportive, caring and non-judgmental manner with staff and patients to gain confidence and cooperation with patients Ability to care plan and identify appropriate nursing interventions. Microsoft Office Proficient. EMR experience preferred.

Work Environment and Hazards: No hazardous conditions. Protected from weather conditions. Risk of exposure to communicable diseases. Possible exposure to intoxicated, disruptive and agitated patients.

Emergency Classification: Essential Personnel

Physical Requirements: Light work – lifting 25 lbs maximum. Involves sitting and a certain amount of walking and standing occasionally to carry out job functions.
