Shop Manager – Manufacturing Operations

About the Role

Virginia Transformer Corporation — the largest U.S.-based power transformer manufacturer — is seeking an experienced and highly organized
Shop Manager
to oversee daily operations in a designated functional area within our Rincon, GA manufacturing facility.

The Shop Manager will be responsible for leading production activities, managing people and materials, ensuring adherence to process controls, and driving execution against the Master Production Schedule (MPS). This is a hands-on leadership role requiring strong decision-making skills, operational discipline, and the ability to motivate teams in a fast-paced, engineered-to-order manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

Shop Floor Leadership & Execution

  • Manage daily operations of the assigned shop area, including planning, prioritizing, and executing production activities.
  • Oversee scheduling and alignment with the
    Master Production Schedule (MPS)
    to ensure on-time delivery.
  • Monitor workflow, labor utilization, equipment use, and production output to meet operational targets.
  • Ensure all shop activities comply with safety regulations, operational standards, and company policies.

People Management

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of supervisors, leads, and hourly operators.
  • Drive performance accountability through goal-setting, evaluations, and feedback.
  • Partner with HR on staffing needs, employee relations, attendance, discipline, and training.
  • Foster a positive, collaborative shop environment focused on quality, safety, and continuous improvement.

Material & Resource Management

  • Ensure timely availability of materials, components, and tooling required for production.
  • Coordinate with Supply Chain and Warehouse teams to manage inventory, reduce shortages, and prevent delays.
  • Identify and resolve bottlenecks in material flow, equipment constraints, or workforce allocation.

Process Controls & Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain strict adherence to process controls, standard work, and documented procedures.
  • Monitor product quality within the shop area and coordinate corrective actions as needed.
  • Implement Lean manufacturing tools to eliminate waste, improve cycle time, and enhance operational efficiency.
  • Support cross-functional improvement projects in collaboration with Engineering, Quality, and Maintenance teams.

Performance Tracking & Reporting

  • Track key performance indicators (KPIs) such as safety, productivity, quality, labor hours, and schedule adherence.
  • Report daily progress, challenges, and improvement actions to plant leadership.
  • Ensure accurate timekeeping, production reporting, and system updates within ERP/MPS tools.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Operations, Industrial Management, or related field preferred.
  • 7–9 years of shop management experience
    in a manufacturing or industrial production environment
    required
    .
  • Strong leadership skills with experience managing multi-shift, diverse production teams.
  • Solid understanding of manufacturing processes, workflow management, and production planning.
  • Experience working in environments with strict quality, safety, and compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency with ERP/MPS systems and Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in transformer manufacturing, electrical equipment, or heavy industrial fabrication.
  • Working knowledge of Lean manufacturing or Six Sigma tools.
  • Ability to read technical drawings, work instructions, and manufacturing specifications.
  • Familiarity with welding, fabrication, assembly, machining, or related shop functions.
