Position Summary
The Armed Security Officer provides safety, security, and control of inmates, staff, visitors, and facility assets at correctional facilities. Officers perform armed access control, interior and exterior patrols, inmate supervision, emergency response, and enforcement of facility rules in full compliance with contract requirements.
Key Responsibilities
· Maintain armed access control at facility entry and exit points.
· Conduct interior and exterior patrols of housing units, recreation areas, sally ports, and perimeter zones.
· Perform regular inspections of doors, bars, locks, walls, windows, floors, ventilation covers, lighting, and security equipment and document all findings in logbooks (daily inspection requirement).
· Monitor inmate activity to ensure compliance with facility rules, safety procedures, and standards.
· Maintain continuous observation of inmates in housing units, medical holding, and special management units as assigned.
· Conduct inmate counts, escorts, movements, and controlled transports within the facility.
· Respond to disturbances, medical emergencies, fires, suicide attempts, and facility incidents.
· Assist medical staff during emergency response and inmate transport when required.
· Enforce rules regarding searches, contraband control, and use of restraints strictly.
· Maintain accurate and timely shift reports, incident reports, and security logs.
· Immediately notify supervisors of any facility damage, safety hazards, escapes, self-harm, or significant security events.
· Maintain professionalism, integrity, and impartiality when interacting with inmates, staff, and the public.
Qualifications
· High school diploma or GED required.
· Minimum of one (1) year of armed security, corrections, law enforcement, or military experience preferred.
· Must be at least 21 years of age.
· Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident authorized to work in the United States.
· Must meet state and local armed security licensing requirements.
· Must be able to qualify with assigned firearms and maintain weapons proficiency.
· Must successfully pass:
o Comprehensive background investigation
o Drug screening
o Psychological screening (if required by contract)
· Ability to stand, walk, climb stairs, restrain individuals, lift up to 50 lbs, and work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Training Requirements
All Armed Security Officers must successfully complete initial and annual recurrent training, including:
· Use of Force and Restraints
o Approved defensive tactics
o Crisis intervention
o Conflict de-escalation techniques
· Chemical Agents Training, including treatment of exposed individuals
· Search Procedures, including:
o Pat searches
o Opposite-sex pat searches
· Emergency Medical Response Training, including:
o First Aid
o CPR
o Recognition of medical and mental health emergencies
· Suicide Prevention and Self-Harm Recognition Training (initial and annually)
· Sexual Abuse and Assault Prevention and Intervention Training
· Special Management Unit (SMU) Training, including:
o Mental health observation
o Effects of isolation
o De-escalation techniques
· Hunger Strike Recognition and Referral Procedures
· Facility Rules, Inmate/Detainee Rights, and Reporting Requirements
Firearms & Equipment Requirements
· Must qualify with all assigned duty weapons prior to assumption of post and annually thereafter.
· Maintain proficiency in:
o Firearm safety
o Weapon retention
o Judgmental use-of-force scenarios
· Must properly wear issued duty belt, body armor, radio, and protective equipment.
Professional Conduct Standards
· Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
· Follow all policies regarding:
o Inmate/Detainee dignity and rights
o Use of force
o Reporting obligations
· Zero tolerance for:
o Excessive force
o Harassment
o Abuse of authority
o Contraband introduction
