Engineers or scientists by training, As an Area Safety Manager at Schuff Steel, you will bring a highly specialized skill set, marrying technical expertise with management skills to translate corporate policy into practice.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Developing and leading a formal sustainability program
  • Creating successful internal partnerships to integrate safety values and practices across the business
  • Communicating enterprise risks associated with environmental, health, or safety failures
  • Establishing global corporate EHS standards and practices
  • Publicly reporting progress on a full spectrum of EHS and sustainability initiatives
  • Responding to stakeholder inquiries about their company's EHS and sustainability performance
  • Working with the supply chain
  • Global auditing
  • Ensuring safe and healthy workplaces around the world

  • Proven ability to train large groups of employees
  • Knowledge of OSHA, ADOSH, Cal OSHA, and EPA rules and regulations.

Education/Training - Work Experience:

  • Three -Five (3-5) years of proven safety management experience within a fabrication/shop environment.

Specialized Knowledge – Certificates & Licenses:

As outlined in the Core Competencies, an individual must have thorough knowledge and an advanced understanding of each competency outlined above to carry out the essential functions of this position.  Specialized Knowledge is also required in the following areas: 

  • PPE, HAZCOM, Confined Space, and Lockout/Tag-out
  • Electrical, NFPA 70E procedures
  • Production line procedures
  • Heavy machine equipment as it relates to appropriate machine guarding

Software & Technology:

  • The position will require the frequent use of MS Windows 7 and/or MS Windows 10, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Outlook.  BlueBeam PDF Software; Concur Software for expenses, or applicable software. 

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

  • The position requires as many hours as needed to fulfill the daily and weekly obligations. Working long days, including evenings and weekends, can be required for this position. The position requires frequent out-of-state air/road travel as needed and required.  A clean driving record will be required due to the required road travel. A current and valid driver's license and proof of acceptable insurance are required.  This position is generally indoors in a climate-controlled office.  However, frequent visitations to the outdoor plant facilities will be required.  Travel time is 50-75%.   Reasonable accommodations may be made upon request for those who have disabilities that qualify under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to:

  • Fumes or airborne particles and extreme heat.

  • Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and toxic or caustic chemicals. 
  • Occasionally climbing ladders/scaffolding and working at heights in precarious places

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required:

  • Regularly required to stand and/or sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach outward and above shoulders with hands and arms; and talk or hear. 
  • Frequently is required to walk and stoop, bend, kneel, squat, crouch, or crawl. 
  • Occasionally required to climb or balance. 
  • Must occasionally lift, carry, and/or move up to 75 lbs. 
  • Occasionally push and/or pull a maximum force of 200 ft-lb. 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. 
  • Mental and visual application required to interpret drawings, layout, and plan work.  
  • Good judgment in determining the best method and procedure to be followed.
  • Work on jobs while applying safety rules at all times. SAFETY is priority one at all times
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)  (Hard Hat, Steel-toed boots, safety glasses, gloves, earplugs, long pants, long-sleeved shirt, respirator, etc.
