Mid-Senior Microservices Engineer

Nginering is seeking a skilled mid-level to senior Microservices Engineer to support the modernization of a mission-critical insurance underwriting platform—an enterprise-scale, cloud-native system that streamlines data, enhances reporting, and improves service delivery across a federal agency's programs. As part of a high-performing Agile team, the engineer will build microservices, APIs, and scalable integrations leveraging Java/Spring Boot, Python, AWS, GraphQL, and Kafka to power a modern digital ecosystem for our federal client. We are seeking a truly hands-on software developer—someone who is comfortable with hands-on coding and delivering high-quality solutions in a fast-paced environment. We are hiring only local candidates in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Support requirements discovery and engineering discussions with the customer
• Under the guidance of the Tech Lead, support the development, testing and delivery of microservices and REST APIs working in close collaboration with other developers, testers and business analysts
• Design, develop, and implement data models and accompanying Object-Relational Mapping services
• Support the development of declarative business rules using Drools or similar rules engine
• Track and manage all development activities using JIRA and Confluence
• Implement CI/CD pipelines using Pipelines as Code to automate build, testing and deployment of applications
• Support development of design documents, technical diagrams and other artifacts as needed

Required Skills

• Self-initiated hands-on engineer who loves to code and build functional products
• 4–8 years of experience as a hands-on Software Engineer developing Java/Spring Boot applications
• Hands-on experience developing microservices and REST/GraphQL APIs using Spring Boot (and optionally if needed)
• Strong experience developing microservices or automation components using Python
• Experience with Kafka or similar event streaming platforms
• Data modeling expertise with ORM frameworks such as JPA/Hibernate
• Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines using GitLab CI and Pipelines as Code
• Proficiency with Docker and containerized application development
• Hands-on experience building AWS-native applications using services such as ECS/Fargate, Lambda, RDS, EFS, and S3
• Good understanding of secure software development and application security practices
• Experience building and documenting APIs using OpenAPI/Swagger
• Experience with unit and integration testing of microservices
