Capital Veterinary Specialists is looking for a Lead Surgery Veterinary Technician to join us as part of the Thrive Pet Healthcare community.
As a Lead Surgery Veterinary Technician you'll play an important role in pets' lives by providing end-to-end care for our precious patients. Your life-changing work will range from the hands-on care of facilitating outpatient treatments and performing laboratory tests, to support services including admitting and discharging patients.
Role Responsibilities:
Team Leadership
- Setting clear expectations for behavior, communication, and clinical performance
- Coaching, mentoring, and developing each technician's skills and confidence
Addressing performance concerns with clarity and fairness
Supporting technician wellbeing and morale through positive leadership
- Staff schedule
Operational Oversight
- Managing surgical technician scheduling to align with caseload and staff capacity
- Ensuring surgical suite readiness: equipment function, inventory stocked, instruments sterilized
Streamlining workflow and communication between surgery prep, doctors, and recovery teams
Problem-solving clinical or logistical issues that arise during the day
- Oversight of Cubex (stocking, discrepancy resolution, cycle counts)
- Maintenance of surgical equipment
Training & Development
- Onboarding and training new hires in anesthesia, surgery protocols, and best practices
- Organizing in-house skill refreshers and CE opportunities
- Building a team culture that values learning, curiosity, and shared knowledge
Clinical Excellence
- Ensuring consistent, high-quality patient care throughout the perioperative period
- Monitoring compliance with anesthetic protocols, surgical checklists, and safety standards
- Leading by example through hands-on support when needed
Collaboration & Communication
- Acting as a communication bridge between technicians, surgeons, and leadership
- Bringing team concerns, ideas, or improvement opportunities to leadership
- Supporting hospital-wide initiatives and cross-department collaboration
Daily/Weekly Responsibilities
- Morning team check-ins or surgical huddles
- Mid-shift walkthroughs to observe flow and support team members
- Addressing equipment, inventory, or procedural needs
- Holding 1-on-1 check-ins or coaching conversations as needed
- Reviewing technician documentation and anesthetic records for accuracy
- Meeting with leadership to align on hospital priorities
Experience & Skills Requirements:
- Veterinary technician licensure preferred, but not required
- 3-5 years of clinical surgical experience
- 2-3 years leadership experience
- An Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program preferred; or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
