Quality Control Inspector - Used Vehicle ReconditioningPosition Summary

The Quality Control Inspector is responsible for performing the final, comprehensive audit of all reconditioned used vehicles. This role ensures every vehicle meets the dealership's strict mechanical, safety, cosmetic, and documentation standards, minimizing costly rework, enhancing customer satisfaction, and protecting the dealership's reputation.

The QC Inspector is the final authority that determines if a vehicle is officially "Front Line Ready."

Essential Duties and Responsibilities1. Mechanical and Safety Inspection Audits

  • Final Verification: Conduct a rigorous post-repair inspection of all items listed on the original Repair Order (RO) to confirm that all required and recommended mechanical work has been completed correctly and to manufacturer/dealership specifications.
  • Road Testing: Perform a comprehensive road test (typically 5-10 minutes) on every unit to verify drivability, identify any new or missed issues, and confirm the function of key systems (engine, transmission, brakes, steering, climate control, electronics).

2. Cosmetic and Detail Audit

  • Exterior Examination: Inspect the exterior for body damage, paint imperfections, alignment of panels, and the quality of any authorized paint or body repairs. Ensure all dealer stickers and prior auction markings are correctly placed or removed.
  • Interior Examination: Inspect the interior for cleanliness, odor, upholstery damage, and function of all interior electronics (infotainment, power seats, windows, locks).
  • Lot Ready: Ensure tires are correctly inflated, fluids are topped off, there are no MIL lights on, and the car is properly fueled for display and test drives.

3. Documentation and Inventory Compliance

  • Paperwork Accuracy: Verify that the vehicle's electronic status in the Dealer Management System (DMS) or reconditioning software accurately reflects its physical condition and location (e.g., mileage updated, "Recon Complete" status). Verify the FTC buyers guide and PricePro window stickers are on the vehicle.
  • Compliance Check: Confirm that the VIN is legible and matches all documentation and miles match as recorded within 100 miles. Update miles if necessary.

4. Communication and Process Improvement

  • Defect Reporting: Clearly document any defects or deficiencies found during the QC process on a dedicated rework order. Communicate findings promptly and professionally to the Service Manager and Recon Manager for immediate resolution.
  • Feedback Loop: Participate in regular meetings to provide feedback on recurring quality issues, helping to identify root causes and improve the efficiency and quality standards of the service and detailing departments.

Qualifications

  • Experience: Preference of 2+ years of experience in automotive repair, service writing, parts, or a Quality Control/Inspection role, preferably within a dealership or automotive service environment.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of automotive mechanical systems, vehicle construction, and common repair procedures.
  • Certifications: ASE Certification is a plus.
  • Licensing: Must possess a valid Driver's License and a clean driving record.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to stand, walk, drive, and frequently enter and exit vehicles; must be able to work in various weather conditions.

Key Competencies

  • Exceptional Attention to Detail: The ability to notice minor mechanical flaws and cosmetic imperfections that others miss.
  • Integrity: Unwavering commitment to safety and quality standards, refusing to clear a vehicle that does not meet requirements.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to clearly define defects and offer constructive feedback for resolution.

Communication: Excellent written and verbal skills for creating clear inspection reports and interacting with department managers.
