We're looking for a hands-on Controller to help build and scale the accounting function for a growing Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) company. This is a high-impact role for a CPA with public accounting, startup/scaleup, and/or private equity experience who enjoys rolling up their sleeves, owning the details, and creating structure in a fast-moving environment. You'll be responsible for everything from day-to-day accounting operations to audit leadership, inventory and cost accounting, and designing scalable processes that support growth.
- This role is ideal for someone who thrives in startup or mid-market environments, is comfortable with ambiguity, and has built or rebuilt accounting functions before.
- Role is REMOTE with occasional travel to Florida office.
Responsibilities:
Own the Close & Financials
- Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes with accuracy and speed
- Prepare and review GAAP-compliant financial statements and supporting schedules
- Establish practical accounting policies and internal controls that scale with the business
Inventory & Cost Accounting
- Own all inventory accounting, including standard costing, variances, reserves, and obsolescence
- Partner closely with operations and supply chain to ensure accurate inventory tracking across manufacturers, co-packers, and warehouses
- Drive visibility into product costs, gross margins, and SKU-level profitability
Audit & Technical Accounting
- Serve as the primary lead for external audits and manage auditor relationships end-to-end
- Own audit readiness, documentation, and technical accounting positions
- Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and support tax and regulatory requirements
Build from the Ground Up
- Design and implement accounting processes, systems, and controls from scratch or through rapid growth
- Build, mentor, and scale a lean accounting team as the company grows
- Lead ERP or accounting system implementations and process automation initiatives
Partner Across the Business
- Work closely with FP&A, operations, supply chain, and leadership to support decision-making
- Provide insights on pricing, margin improvement, inventory optimization, and growth initiatives
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management
Required Qualifications:
Must-Have
- Active CPA license
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
- Big 4/Public accounting experience
- 10–15+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 4 years in controller/leadership roles
- Proven experience leading external audits
- Strong inventory and cost accounting experience in a CPG or manufacturing environment
- Demonstrated ability to build accounting functions, processes, or teams in a startup or mid-market company
- Solid understanding of U.S. GAAP and internal controls
Nice to Have
- Experience in high-growth CPG, food & beverage, or manufacturing startups
- ERP implementation experience (NetSuite or similar preferred)
- Experience working with co-manufacturers and multi-channel distribution
- Systems-oriented mindset with a focus on automation and efficiency
