POSITION SUMMARY

The Heavy Equipment Operator operates various heavy construction equipment on disaster recovery, debris removal, civil construction, and environmental projects. This position requires proficiency in excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, loaders, graders, and skid steers while adhering to safety protocols and project specifications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Equipment Operation:
  • Operate excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, loaders, motor graders, skid steers, compactors, and attachments
  • Execute earthmoving, grading, excavation, debris removal, and site preparation per specifications
  • Maneuver equipment safely in confined spaces and on varied terrain
Safety and Compliance:
  • Conduct preoperation and postoperation equipment inspections
  • Comply with OSHA, EPA, DOT regulations and company safety policies
  • Maintain awareness of personnel, utilities, hazards, and environmental protection zones
  • Use required PPE including hard hat, safety vest, boots, gloves, and hearing protection
  • Report equipment malfunctions, safety concerns, and environmental incidents immediately
Project Execution:
  • Read and interpret construction drawings, site plans, and work orders
  • Coordinate with project managers, supervisors, and crew members
  • Support disaster recovery, civil construction, and environmental remediation operations
  • Track daily production, hours operated, and complete required documentation
Equipment Maintenance:
  • Perform routine maintenance including fluid checks, lubrication, and minor adjustments
  • Monitor equipment performance and report mechanical issues promptly
  • Maintain equipment cleanliness and ensure proper storage
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Support equipment loading, unloading, and transportation
  • Participate in safety meetings and training programs
  • Support 24/7 emergency response operations as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 35 years heavy equipment operation experience
  • Proficiency in at least three equipment types (excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, loaders, graders, or skid steers)
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable record; CDL Class A or B strongly preferred
  • OSHA 10Hour certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days)
  • Ability to pass preemployment drug and alcohol screening
  • Ability to pass background check and obtain security clearances for federal projects
  • Proven safety record with no major violations in past three years
Preferred:
  • NCCCO, NCCER, or equivalent operator certification
  • FEMA disaster response or emergency debris removal experience
  • GPS/grade control system experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Advanced proficiency operating multiple heavy equipment types
  • Understanding of equipment capabilities, limitations, and safe operating parameters
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and basic troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent spatial awareness, depth perception, and handeye coordination
  • Strong safety mindset and commitment to protocols
  • Effective communication skills for crew coordination
  • Selfmotivated with ability to work independently
  • Physical stamina for extended shifts
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Physical Requirements:
  • Sit in operator seat for 812 hours with repetitive movements
  • Climb into and out of equipment multiple times daily
  • Lift and carry up to 75 pounds regularly
  • Adequate visual and hearing capabilities for safe operation
Work Environment:
  • Work performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Exposure to dust, dirt, noise, vibration, and diesel fumes
  • Work on uneven terrain, slopes, and challenging ground conditions
  • Extended hours, weekends, holidays, and emergency callouts may be required
  • Travel to project sites with potential overnight assignments
EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS
Probationary Period:

All new employees are subject to a 90-day probationary period from the date of hire. During this period, employment performance, conduct, and suitability will be evaluated. Employment may be terminated at any time during the probationary period at the discretion of management without cause.

Drug and Alcohol Testing:

Employees are subject to drug and alcohol testing throughout their employment in accordance with company policy and federal regulations. This includes:

  • Preemployment drug and alcohol screening (required before start date)
  • Random drug and alcohol testing during employment
  • Postaccident testing following workplace incidents or equipment damage
  • Reasonable suspicion testing when behavior or performance indicates possible impairment
  • Returntoduty and followup testing as required

Refusal to submit to testing or positive test results will result in disciplinary action up to and including immediate termination of employment.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
  • Hourly wage based on experience and certifications ranging from $25 $35 an hour
  • Overtime compensation for hours over 40 per week
  • Per diem and travel reimbursement for outofarea assignments
