Company DescriptionFerrovial Construction Canada Inc. and VINCI Construction Grands Projets are undertaking the design, build, and finance of the Ontario Line Southern Civil, Stations, and Tunnel (South Civil) package.
Project Overview- A six‑kilometer tunnel and associated tunnelling works from Exhibition to Don Yard portal (west of the Don River).
- Stations:
- One above‑ground station integrated with the existing GO Transit Exhibition Station.
- Two underground stations integrated with the existing TTC Osgoode and Queen subway stations.
- Four new underground stations (King/Bathurst, Queen/Spadina, Moss Park, Corktown).
Faster, more frequent, and reliable access to rapid transit for over 227,500 people within a 10‑minute walk of an Ontario Line station.
- Improve quality of life by reducing daily travel time.
- Reduce crowding on existing Line 1 (Yonge‑University) subway.
- Up to 57,000 more jobs accessible by transit (in 45 minutes or less) for Toronto residents.
- Economic and community growth along the future transit line and thousands of job opportunities during construction.
- Reduction in traffic congestion, greenhouse gases, and fuel consumption by providing an alternative transportation option.
The Mechanical Foreman leads and supervises mechanical works for SEM and tunneling operations, ensuring safe, efficient installation and maintenance of equipment. This role coordinates with project teams, enforces quality standards, manages resources, ensures safety compliance, conducts inspections, and resolves mechanical issues to keep tunneling activities on track.
Key Responsibilities- Mechanical Supervision
- Oversee installation, maintenance, and operation of mechanical equipment related to SEM & tunneling activities.
- Ensure works are carried out safely, efficiently, and according to project specifications.
- Project Coordination
- Collaborate with engineers, site managers, and other trades to coordinate mechanical works within the overall tunneling schedule.
- Ensure mechanical activities do not impede other aspects of the tunneling process.
- Quality Control
- Implement quality control procedures to ensure all mechanical work meets project standards and specifications.
- Regularly inspect mechanical installations and repairs to maintain high‑quality workmanship.
- Safety Management
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and best practices.
- Conduct regular safety briefings and ensure all mechanical workers are properly trained and equipped to perform their duties safely.
- Resource Management
- Manage allocation of mechanical resources, including personnel, tools, and materials.
- Ensure required resources are available on‑site when needed and address any issues promptly.
- Reporting
- Maintain detailed records of mechanical works, including daily logs, equipment usage, and maintenance records.
- Provide regular updates to the project management team on the status of mechanical activities.
- Problem Solving
- Address any mechanical issues or challenges that arise during tunneling operations.
- Work with the engineering team to develop solutions that minimize disruptions and maintain progress.
- Equipment Management
- Oversee the maintenance, repair, and proper operation of all mechanical equipment used in SEM & tunneling.
- Coordinate with the equipment manager to ensure machinery is in optimal working condition.
- Minimum of 7‑10 years of experience in mechanical work within the construction industry, with specific experience in tunneling or underground construction preferred.
- Proven track record in a supervisory role, strong leadership skills, and ability to manage and motivate a team of mechanical workers.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting mechanical drawings, specifications, and blueprints. Strong knowledge of SEM tunneling processes and mechanical systems.
- Deep understanding of safety regulations and best practices, particularly in tunneling and underground construction. Certification in safety management or related fields is an asset.
- Excellent communication skills, effectively aligning with engineers, site managers, and stakeholders.
- Strong problem‑solving skills, thinking critically and developing solutions to complex mechanical challenges.
- Must be willing to register as a member of the local union.
