About the Centre

Athabasca University and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) have formed the RAIC Centre for Architecture at Athabasca University. The mission of the Centre is to provide an inclusive, accessible and comprehensive education in architectural studies with a focus on environmental sustainability. This is Canada’s first online school of architecture, offering a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and a Post‑Baccalaureate Diploma in Architecture. The Centre also contributes to the renewal of the RAIC Syllabus, a work‑study program culminating in a RAIC Syllabus Diploma in Architecture that serves as an alternative path to professional licensure as an architect in Canada.

Position
  • Title: Academic Coordinator, Architecture – 0.2 FTE, part‑time term position ending October 31, 2026.
  • Location: RAIC Centre for Architecture, Faculty of Science and Technology, Athabasca University.
  • Primary responsibilities: overseeing the teaching, administration, and maintenance of Graduate courses including APST 505: Advanced Structures and ARCH 653: Contemporary Architectural Theory and Research.
  • In addition to coordinating these courses, the Academic Coordinator will teach at the RAIC Centre and participate in the delivery of the B.Sc. in Architecture, Graduate Diploma in Architecture, and a new Master of Architecture program.
Responsibilities
  • Mark assignments and assessments for assigned courses.
  • Ensure proper application of the University’s academic policies and regulations.
  • Handle student complaints, problems, and inquiries related to courses.
  • Respond to inquiries from University staff and students regarding all aspects of assigned courses.
  • Collaborate with faculty to develop short‑ and long‑term plans for course development and delivery.
  • Participate in program reviews as required.
  • Promote the programs and courses to target sectors, attract additional enrollments and graduates, generate new revenues, and establish partnerships.
  • Represent the Centre at relevant professional bodies and events.
  • Provide support to advisory committees as required.
  • Work with University Relations to foster program student and alumni activities within the context of the Athabasca University Students’ Union and Alumni Association.
Qualifications General

Distinguished record of creative accomplishments in architecture and/or engineering related to the built environment, distinction in professional practice, and demonstrated success in promoting excellence in teaching and scholarship. Understanding of the structure of architectural practice and professional education in Canada.

Specific Educational and Professional Credentials
  • Professional degree from an accredited architecture or engineering program.
  • Advanced post‑professional degree (Master or PhD) in a related field preferred.
  • Licensure as an architect or engineer in a Canadian jurisdiction, or eligibility for licensure.
  • Extensive experience in online learning and familiarity with AU‑specific digital teaching and administration technologies (Brightspace, GreyMatter, Grades, Much Learning, MS Teams, SharePoint) is a desired asset.
  • English proficiency is mandatory.
Areas of Expertise

The Centre provides an architectural education based on the Procedures and Standards for Assessment of Non‑accredited Degrees or Diplomas established by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board. The candidate must demonstrate academic and professional expertise related to theory and technical studies in architecture.
