Senior Software Engineer - SRE, Backend (Reliability Engineering)

• Site Reliability Engineering at Affirm is a small, yet crucial, team that helps our Engineering partners to “Operate What They Own” with excellence to protect their customers’ experience. SRE accomplishes this through defining frameworks and best practices for operating applications, building tooling, and providing training and consulting.
• Providing data and visibility to teams and leadership on application performance
• Guiding the development of SLOs
• Driving the Incident Management and Analysis process
• Steering the implementation of Change Management and Deployment practices
• Engaging in service and architectural conversations
• Recommending observability and alerting configurations

• Experience across infrastructure, platform, and distributed systems
• Capacity management, load and chaos testing
• Automation, observability, and configuration management
• Development and product experience

• Own and deliver quarterly goals for your team, lead engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems, and support delivery
• Collaborate with product management, design & analytics during ideation, articulate technical constraints, and partner on risk-aware decisions
• Proactively identify and lead the resolution of project, process, technology, or business issues
• Support operations and availability of team artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting on-call duties
• Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting or improving code review and design standards and advocating for them beyond your team
• Develop talent by providing feedback and guidance and leading by example

• 4+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin
• Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL and Kubernetes
• 4+ years working in a Site Reliability or Production Engineering team
• Curiosity with empathy and strong opinions loosely held
• Experience defining a technical plan for delivering significant features or components with elegant, simple, and extensible design; high-quality code
• Ability to make significant changes in a large code base and develop tools/practices to do so safely
• Ownership mindset, seeking feedback proactively
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with a global engineering team

Base Pay Grade - N

Equity Grade - 6

Base pay is part of a total compensation package including equity rewards, stipends for health, wellness and tech spending, and benefits (including 100% subsidized medical coverage, dental and vision for you and your dependents).

CAN base pay range per year: $150,000 - $200,000

Affirm is remote-first; most roles are remote within the country of employment. Some roles may require working from an Affirm office.
