About the role National Energy System Operator (NESO) recognises the potential of bright and talented individuals and invites you to join us as Great Britain’s energy system undergoes an ambitious, exciting, and vital transformation. Together with industry we are creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
The offline modelling team enables planning and operations across England, Scotland and Wales by maintaining and developing GB‑wide system models. These models are used for short‑term to long‑term planning, from an hour ahead up to 12 years. The team works with industry participants—Transmission Owners, Distribution Network Owners, Generators and OEMs—to share data and best practices, enhancing product accuracy.
This role can be based from Wokingham or Warwick, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home.
Key Responsibilities
Lead power and energy system modelling, analysis and optimisation.
Direct data management and assurance initiatives to maintain modelling accuracy and reliability, sourcing new data when needed.
Build effective relationships and communicate modelling activities to key stakeholders, notably TOs, OEMs and Ofgem.
Deliver analyses and create impactful visualisations of modelling results using NESO’s enterprise data and Azure cloud environments.
Lead the development and implementation of analytical tools and data pipelines that enhance modelling, streamline analysis, and improve team processes.
Stay up to date with the latest innovations in power system modelling, optimisation, data science, analytics, visualisation and cloud technologies.
Engage with users to identify requirements, ensure legislative compliance, manage strategic projects, resolve customer queries, create training materials, and review processes annually.
Essential Qualifications
Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Maths or a relevant field.
Knowledge of power systems operation, planning and modelling.
Experience in power system optimisation and techno‑economic assessments.
Familiarity with Python development and DevOps.
Understanding of industry frameworks, codes and technical challenges.
Critical thinking and the ability to challenge ideas constructively.
Professional communication, teamwork and influencing skills.
Desired Attributes
Proficiency with power and energy system simulation tools and scripting for automated analyses.
Industry experience in power system analysis, especially transmission and offshore network development.
Project management experience from inception to completion.
Proficiency in Python development and DevOps.
Knowledge of optimisation methods (LP, MILP) and their application in power systems.
Benefits A competitive salary between £55,000 and £72,000 pa, dependent on experience and capability.
Base salary plus a bonus based on company performance, 26 days annual leave as standard and a competitive contributory pension scheme with double matching up to 12% of your contribution.
