The Director of Payroll is responsible for overseeing the payroll operations for Morehouse School of Medicine ensuring timely and accurate payroll processing in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. This role involves managing payroll staff, optimizing payroll systems and processes, and collaborating with cross-functional departments to support strategic financial initiatives. The Director of Payroll will also be responsible for maintaining the highest standards of confidentiality, integrity, and data accuracy.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Management

  • Lead and manage the payroll team, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback.
  • Establish and monitor performance goals for payroll staff to ensure productivity, Accuracy, and efficiency.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative work environment, encouraging professional growth and development.

Payroll Operations

  • Oversee the processing of bi-weekly, monthly, and special payroll runs, ensuring accurate and timely payroll distribution.
  • Ensure all payroll activities are compliant with internal policies and external regulations.
  • Manage payroll records and ensure accurate data entry, reporting, and tax filings.
  • Handle complex payroll issues, including escalated inquiries, and resolve discrepancies in payroll and benefits calculations.

System Optimization and Process Improvement

  • Evaluate and optimize payroll systems and procedures for efficiency and accuracy.
  • Partner with the Information Technology (IT) department to enhance payroll software functionality.
  • Drive process improvements to streamline payroll operations and reduce manual tasks.
  • Compliance and Reporting
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws, wage/hour laws, and other regulations impacting payroll.
  • Prepare and analyze payroll-related reports, providing insights to the CFO and senior management.
  • Oversee the preparation and submission of year-end reports, including W-2s, 1099s, and other required documents.

Strategic Collaboration

  • Collaborate with HR, Finance, and Benefits teams to align payroll practices with organizational goals.
  • Support budgeting and forecasting processes by providing payroll cost projections and data analysis.
  • Participate in cross-functional projects, offering payroll expertise and insight.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in payroll software (e.g., ADP, Workday) and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively under pressure.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field is required.
  • At least 8 years of progressive experience in payroll, including 3+ years in a leadership role.
  • Extensive knowledge of payroll best practices, tax regulations, and compliance requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) certification is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with payroll system implementation or upgrades is a plus.
  • Accounting Degree

It is MSM's Immunization policy that all Prospective Employees are encouraged to provide proof that they are vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment.
