Job Description: Financial Controller – Excavation &

Site Work Contractor

Position Summary:

The Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial operations of the excavation and site work division. This role manages accounting, budgeting, job costing, and financial reporting functions to ensure the company's financial health and compliance. The ideal candidate has strong construction accounting experience, particularly in heavy civil or site development projects, with a hands-on approach to job cost management and cash flow control.

Key Responsibilities:

Oversee all accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and job cost accounting.

  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Maintain Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and job profitability reports.
  • Track and analyze project budgets, costs, and profit margins for excavation and site development projects.
  • Collaborate with project managers and estimators to ensure costs are captured accurately (labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors).
  • Develop and manage annual budgets and cash flow forecasts to support operations and capital investments.
  • Oversee weekly payroll processing for field crews and shop personnel, including certified payroll when required.
  • Monitor equipment utilization, maintenance costs, and depreciation schedules.
  • Review subcontractor invoices, lien waivers, and insurance certificates for compliance.
  • Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with GAAP.
  • Coordinate with external accountants, auditors, and bonding agents for financial reporting and audits.
  • Manage construction accounting and job costing software systems for accuracy and efficiency.
  • Provide financial insights to leadership for estimating, bidding, and long-term strategic planning.
  • Lead and mentor accounting staff, promoting accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CMA preferred).
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in construction, excavation, or site development.
  • Strong understanding of job costing, WIP schedules, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.
  • Proficiency with construction accounting software (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, QuickBooks Contractor, Viewpoint).
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Experience with equipment cost tracking and capital budgeting.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with project management and field teams.

Working Conditions:

This is a full-time position based in the company's main office, with occasional visits to job sites as needed. Standard business hours apply, with extended hours possible during month-end, year-end, or major project reviews.

Pay: $75, $100,000.00 per year
