The Position
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a dedicated, hands-on individual to join Region Four's Junction Maintenance Station as a Transportation Technician II.

This critical role is part of a dedicated team responsible for overseeing and supporting the construction and maintenance of state roads, helping to Keep Utah Moving safely and efficiently.

Principle Duties
As a transportation technician in maintenance, you will learn about general maintenance activities related to state routes, highways, and other transportation infrastructure. Your responsibilities will include operating heavy machinery such as snowplows, salt spreaders, front-end loaders, and backhoes to maintain the roads, inspecting and testing materials used, and utilizing software to manage the Department's assets. After 18 months, each transportation technician is expected to cross-train in various construction areas. You will perform the following:

  • Removing snow from state roadways using snowplows/front-end loaders/salt spreaders/graders/blowers, and other related equipment.
  • Performing general maintenance to roadway and drainage features.
  • Performing general maintenance on equipment.
  • Performing materials testing and providing the associated required documentation to ensure features are constructed/installed according to project plans and specifications.
  • Performing construction inspection and documentation on the work performed by contractors.
  • Working with contractors to complete construction, maintenance, and permit projects.
  • Performing vegetation management, including herbicide application.
  • Completing other duties as assigned and needed by department leadership.

Minimum Qualifications
The qualified candidate for this position must:

  • Possess a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or is able to obtain one within six months of hire through Department-provided training and participate in the Region's snow plan. See UDOT Policy 06A-15 Driver License Requirements.
  • Is able and willing to report in a 30-minute response time to the UDOT Junction Maintenance Station,located at 255 West Center St, Junction UT 84740.
  • Be available to provide 24-hour availability.
  • Provide a personal smartphone with data, eligible to receive a monthly taxable allowance to offset the cost of cell plan cost. See UDOT Policy 02-26 Cell Phones
  • Be physically able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and perform other physically demanding tasks as required.
  • Demonstrate reliability and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Be willing to complete continued education through the UDOT Transportation Technician Education Program (TEP).
  • Obtain and maintain Region required certifications within the first year of employment

This position may be filled at the Transportation Technician I level for applicants who do not meet the preferences listed below. In order to qualify at the Transportation Technician I level, applicants must have a class "A" CDL or be able to obtain one within 6 months of hire. After hire, candidate will need to complete all TEP, maintenance equipment, and construction certification requirements.

Preferences
Preference may be given to applicants who:

  • Possess Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Have completed Transportation Technician II training through the Transportation Education Program (TEP).
  • Have prior UDOT maintenance or construction experience.
  • Have professional work experience operating heavy equipment.
  • Have professional work experience with, or knowledge of, roadway maintenance. construction practices and snow removal operations.

  • Registration with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse (Clearinghouse) is a requirement for all commercial driver license and learner permit holder's. Selected candidate will be required to register and authorize UDOT to conduct full pre-employment queries and limited queries on their CDL for the duration of their employment in order to be selected for this role.   • This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing of employees after hire. A conditional offer of employment may be made pending drug test results.
  • This position requires you to frequently be exposed to hazards and discomforts of traffic and environmental conditions due to the nature of the work assignment.
  • This position requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
  • Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader.
