Description

The Transportation Operations Manager oversees all trucking fleet operations for the companys tanker and drayage division and is responsible for the successful day to day execution of the operational plans.

Major Responsibilities

  • Manage union employee drivers, supervisors, dispatchers, & administrative personnel. Serve as liaison with Independent Contractor drivers
  • Oversee the fleet maintenance department, ensure proper rolling stock capacity to meet customer demand. Verify all transportation equipment is functional and operates safely; troubleshoot issues as needed. Responsible for fleet compliance.
  • Responsible for driver recruitment, training, qualification, compliance, and retention
  • Oversee all transportation operations for West Coast terminals in California, Arizona, and Nevada
  • Ensure staff is effectively managing day to day delivery activities including routing, customer service, and following SOPs
  • Manage employee driver labor hours, travel, fuel, and other consumables to be in conformance with operating budget. P&L accountability.
  • Analyze trip/fuel reports to maximize efficiency and profitability; identify ways to reduce operating cost. Review all reports regularly and monitor KPIs
  • Perform financial and customer profitability analyses; participate in customer service contract negotiations
  • Direct driver behavior to conform to customer delivery procedures, company policies, and regulations
  • Work closely with Sales and Customer Care to ensure customer needs are being met on a regular basis; conduct regular meetings to communicate goals with necessary parties
  • Troubleshoot and problem solve as issues arise
  • Ensure timeliness and accuracy of Independent Contractor settlements
  • Serve as department leader for incident investigations and customer non-conformances
  • Manage outside carrier & vendor relationships. Create and maintain positive working relationships with customers and consignees
  • Understand the California transportation climate and make decisions based on forecasts
  • Plan and organize quarterly drivers safety meetings
  • Create, promote, and maintain a culture of safety; ensure the regular review of safety policies and SOPs with personnel. Monitor, create, and update transportation SOPs
  • Represent the company in local transportation associations
  • Review routing and backhauls
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in Transportation, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business, Engineering, or similar degree required. Masters degree preferred
  • Must have experience managing a liquid or dry bulk transportation operation. Willing to consider the right person who is strong in other areas. Expertise with port operations/drayage a plus.
  • A deep understanding or transportation regulations including DOT, HOS, FMCSA, Hazcom.
  • A general understanding of transportation equipment/maintenance, and required compliance
  • Minimum 5 years experience managing trucking operation. Preferred experience:
    • Chemicals
    • Food Grade
    • Tankers
    • Hazmat
    • Drayage
  • Must be able to plan, coordinate, execute, and effectively communicate short and long term goals to upper management and staff
  • Experience working with both Union Employee & Independent Contractor drivers
  • Must have a strong detail-oriented background and intuitively grasp data
  • Required leadership and management skills include the ability to motivate and influence others, focus on teamwork, and an emphasis on continuous improvement. Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proficiency with PC software e.g. MS Word, Excel, Project is necessary for this position. Must be self-motivated with good critical thinking, deductive reasoning, and decision-making skills. Must be organized

  • Able to work flexible hours, weekends and be on call
