The BCBA is responsible for overseeing clinical programming, supervising RBTs/BTs, conducting assessments, writing treatment plans, monitoring client progress, and ensuring all services follow ethical, clinical, and insurance guidelines. This role provides leadership, coaching, and clinical excellence while maintaining a supportive, family-centered approach. BCBAs are expected to maintain high clinical standards, uphold documentation requirements, and collaborate closely with families and internal teams.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Assessments & Treatment Planning- Conduct initial and ongoing assessments (VB-MAPP, AFLS, ABLLS, Vineland, Functional Assessments, etc.).
- Develop individualized treatment plans based on assessment outcomes, medical necessity, and family goals.
- Create behavior intervention plans (BIPs), skill acquisition plans, and crisis management strategies.
- Update treatment plans every 6 months or per insurance requirements.
- Provide supervision to RBTs and Behavior Technicians following BACB and payer requirements.
- Conduct direct observation, competency checks, coaching, and performance feedback.
- Model high-quality ABA strategies and ensure staff adhere to treatment plans.
- Support staff performance improvement and help develop their clinical skills.
- Conduct parent training sessions following evidence-based family guidance approaches.
- Maintain clear and compassionate communication with families, ensuring transparency and support.
- Participate in interdisciplinary collaboration with schools, speech therapists, pediatricians, etc.
- Ensure accurate, timely data collection and graphing for all programs and behavior plans.
- Review client progress weekly and adjust programming as clinically necessary.
- Complete session notes, supervision notes, assessments, and insurance documentation on time.
- Ensure compliance with BACB ethics, HIPAA, and payer guidelines.
- Monitor treatment integrity and ensure interventions align with best practice ABA standards.
- Follow organizational policies for billable hours, supervision ratios, and availability requirements.
- Maintain professional boundaries and uphold ethical standards at all times.
- Participate in internal audits, quality checks, and clinical meetings.
- Stay up to date with ABA research, best practices, and continuing education (CEUs).
- Engage in ongoing professional development and training opportunities.
- Maintain BCBA certification
- Master's degree in Applied Behavior Analysis, Psychology, Education, Special Education, or a related field.
- Active BCBA certification from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB).
- Must meet all BACB supervision and competency requirements.
- Experience working with children with autism or developmental disabilities.
- Strong assessment and report-writing skills (FA, FBA, VB-MAPP, AFLS, etc.).
- Ability to train, supervise, and coach RBTs effectively.
- Strong organizational, time management, and case management skills.
- Excellent professional communication skills (verbal and written).
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow HIPAA guidelines.
- Must be able to lift 20–25 lbs and engage with children on the floor during sessions.
- 1–3+ years of independent BCBA clinical experience.
- Experience in a clinic-based ABA environment.
- Knowledge of insurance authorization, medical necessity criteria, and compliance.
- Experience with electronic data platforms (TheraNest, CentralReach, AccuPoint, etc.).
- Bilingual abilities (Spanish/English) are a plus.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed care and family-centered practice.
