North Coast Testing Laboratories of Michigan (NCTLM) is a state-licensed and ISO 17025 accredited laboratory testing facility serving the Michigan cannabis market. NCTLM provides analytical testing services to licensed producers of cannabis flower and cannabis products within the state. Job Summary

NCTLM seeks a detail-oriented individual with scientific aptitude for a position on our microbiology team, which conducts routine testing for microbial contaminants in cannabis flower, concentrates and a wide variety of cannabis-infused products. This position requires a somewhat flexible schedule to accommodate a varying workload, working approximately 8 am – 4 pm weekdays, and requires ability to work at least one weekend day per month. Primary responsibilities involve preparation and analysis of compliance samples using culture-based and qPCR methodology.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Perform microbial analysis on customer samples. Standard compliance tests include enumeration of total coliforms and total yeast and mold and qualitative screening for Aspergillus, Salmonella and Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). Additional tests may be performed at customer request.
  • Follow laboratory SOPs and adhere to all applicable quality assurance policies.
  • Assist Scientific Director in conducting R&D and related method development and verification studies.
  • Ensure all work is performed and documented properly and in compliance with internal procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Use the laboratory's Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to report results obtained from various analyses.
  • Assist in sample preparation and analysis for chemistry tests in the lab as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree in biology, chemistry, laboratory technology or a related field.
  • Proficiency with use of Microsoft Office software (Teams, Excel, etc.).
  • Ability to stand for extended periods during routine lab work.
  • Ability to lift up to 25-30 lbs as part of routine sample handling and reagent preparation.
  • Manual dexterity for precise pipetting.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow detailed SOPs and document work accurately and consistently.
  • Comfortable working with biological agents and chemical reagents.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, production-driven environment with variable sample volume, and maintain flexibility to meet strict turnaround time requirements.
  • Flexibility to work at least one weekend day shift per month.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of various microbial analytical techniques including plate count, most probable number (MPN), and qPCR methods.
  • Basic knowledge of microbiology as it relates to bacteria, yeasts and molds.
  • Familiarity with ISO 17025
  • Prior experience working in the regulated cannabis industry.
  • Proficiency in principles and application of aseptic techniques.
