ABOUT THIS POSITIONThe City of Phoenix Office of Heat Response and Mitigation is charged with establishing and implementing a cohesive strategy to address the growing hazard of urban heat in the nations hottest large city. The office develops plans and programs that include short-term strategies to protect public health during extreme heat events and long-term strategies to create a cooler, safer, and more comfortable city for all.
The Office of Heat Response and Mitigation seek a Community Forestry Coordinator to support local and regional efforts to increase tree canopy coverage. The Community Forestry Coordinator will work collaboratively with City staff and community-based organizations on developing and implementing various tree planting programs. They will support new, innovative initiatives that require working outside of the status quo, all under the city's $10M Urban and Community Forestry Grant from the US Forest Service.
The City of Phoenix and the Office of Heat Response and Mitigation recognize the inequitable burden of extreme heat on different communities and populations. Phoenix was the first community in the United States to adopt the American Forests Tree Equity Pledge, and a core value of the newly adopted Shade Phoenix Plan is to lead tree and shade efforts with an environmental justice and equity lens to address inequities. The Community Forestry Coordinator must reflect these commitments and values in their day-to-day responsibilities. The position is also responsible for administering federal funding from the US Forest Service and will be expected to comply with all relevant rules and regulations. In this position the selected candidate must be highly motivated, focused on results, and demonstrate sound judgment and independence in problem-solving. The successful candidate will report to the Urban Tree Program Manager in the Office of Heat Response and Mitigation.
This position will perform the following duties:
- Engaging and organizing residents, neighborhood associations, community-based organizations, local businesses, and other interest parties to increase tree canopy cover in areas of the city where it is currently lacking.
- Advertising and outreach through traditional methods and social media, organizing and facilitating community meetings and tree planting events.
- Managing participant rosters.
- Coordinating and tracking the deliveries and planting of trees and related services.
- Developing presentations and reports to document project progress.
The temporary position will be hired as a Project Management Assistant in the City of Phoenix job classification and is funded through June 30, 2027. The temporary position will have benefits but will not earn city retirement credits or participate financially into the city's retirement program. If the successful candidate is a current City employee, all benefits will still be applicable, and the employee will still contribute to their pension. Temporary positions are not covered under civil service rules, and thus employment is considered "at-will", and employees may be separated at any time.

Pay Range: $60, $97,780.80 annually.
Hiring Range: $60, $80,454.40 annually.

Part-time employees are eligible for earned paid sick time, city training, and free or discounted bus and light rail fares.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS- Two years of experience in governmental research, urban development, finance or public administration, or other related fields.
- Bachelor's degree in public or business administration, urban planning, architecture, engineering, economics or a related field.
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
- All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

- Experience and enthusiasm for conducting community outreach and education.
- Experience working with contractors.
- Experience working with frontline communities to address environmental or health challenges.
- Experience supporting federally funded programs.
- Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
- Fluent in Spanish.
