The Direct Support Professional provides the teaching and support to people living in the group home as dictated by the ISP. This position provides the direct hands on care to ensure the safety, health, welfare and satisfaction of the individuals served.

The DSP position is for weekends with 12- hour shifts from 8:00 a.m. 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. We also have overnight shifts available during weekdays from 12 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Supports individuals as dictated by the Plan of Support including but not limited to direct assistance and teaching in personal care, domestic tasks, community living, recreational activities, problem solving, financial independence
  • Transports and directly support individuals with appointments and activities
  • Completes all required documentation as required by the program and any applicable licensing or accrediting bodies.
  • Ensures the home and vehicles are clean and well maintained. Reports and maintenance, health or safety concerns immediately
  • Monitors the health and general wellbeing of the individuals served including possible side effects of medication. Assists with the administration of medication when required.
  • Maintains all certifications as required by the program
  • Completes all other duties as assigned

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • 1-year previous experience working with adults with a developmental disability
  • Maintain valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
  • Meet licensing criteria for criminal history.
  • Complete Medicaid Waiver training and Medication Administration certification if required.
  • Maintain current CPR and First Aid certification
  • Demonstrated knowledge of characteristics and concepts of intellectual disabilities
  • Experience supervising others
  • Ability to implement and follow policies and procedures
  • Ability to engage in the support and teaching of people with disabilities
  • Ability to provide basic personal care and hygiene support
  • Ability to participate with professional staff in design and implementation of teaching and programmatic activities
  • Ability to observe the rights and dignity of others
  • Ability to record ad report other's behavior, attitude and physical condition
  • Ability to teach others to perform tasks of daily living
  • Ability to perform simple math
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to write reports with a minimum of grammatical or factual errors
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others

Working conditions

Work may include evening, weekend and/or overnight shifts. Employees may be required to remain on site or evacuate during an emergency. Employees may be subject to aggressive conditions. Continuous "on-call" is required and ability to respond immediately during emergencies.

Physical requirements

Ability to push a wheelchair, support others on and off vans, assistance with physically helping others
