Office of Indiana State Comptroller:
The State Comptroller's office has four main areas — Accounts Payable, Accounting and Reporting, Local Government, and Payroll. Each of these departments plays a crucial role in the functionality of state government. From paying state employees to balancing the state's checkbook to working with local units and developing year-end financial reports, these departments and the employees within them are dedicated to accurate and transparent accounting on behalf of Hoosiers across the state.
Role Overview:
The State Comptroller's Payroll Department is responsible for processing a biweekly payroll for 32,000+ employees across three branches of government. We are seeking a Payroll Tax Analyst to join our team of dedicated payroll professionals to assist with Payroll Tax Compliance. This position requires analytical and problem-solving skills and an in-depth understanding of payroll best practices and payroll tax compliance. The ideal candidate should be a CPP, have a minimum of three years of experience in Payroll Tax Compliance and experience with PeopleSoft for North American Payroll is preferred.
Salary :
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $70,000.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
A Day in the Life:Responsibilities include:
- Serve as a subject matter expert in Payroll Tax Compliance.
- Responsible for withholding and reporting.
- Perform state, local, and federal tax reconciliations.
- Review, interpret, and apply IRS publications to complex tax questions.
- Communicate with tax authorities as needed.
- Research & resolve wage & tax withholding and reporting issues.
- Assist with state & federal tax form inquiries.
- Responsible for preparing federal, state & local tax amendments.
- Assist with ticket management.
- Perform daily analysis of tax queries and reports.
- Perform inputs for tax data.
- Audit tax data inputs/outputs.
- Process complex tax balance adjustments.

What You'll Need for Success:Requirements:
- 3+ years of experience with payroll best practices and tax compliance.
- Experience in payroll tax withholding & reporting.
- Experience with Federal and State Payroll Tax Compliance.
- Knowledge of Forms W-2, W-2c, 941, 941-X, WH-3, WH-1.
- Knowledge of IRS Notifications & Discrepancy letters.
- Experience with researching IRS Publications.
- Experience communicating with tax authorities.
- Must have a strong understanding of filing deadlines.
- Have well-developed root-cause analytical skills.
- Must have the ability to troubleshoot complex problems.
- Must have the ability to multi-task and prioritize.
- Have a strong attention to detail.
- Have strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality and protect sensitive data.
- Must demonstrate exceptional customer service.
- Must have a strong desire to learn independently.
- Must have the ability to collaborate and work with a team.
Preferred Experience:
- 3+ years of payroll experience.
- Certified Payroll Professional.
- Knowledge of payroll concepts & best practices.
- Experience with PeopleSoft Payroll for North America.
- Experience in state government.
