Overall Purpose
The job of Information Support Specialist - Student Information Systems is done for the purpose/s of serving as a resource for users of district-wide information systems (student and business management); developing and/or customizing a wide variety of reports for internal and external use; responding to written and verbal requests for reports, data extracts, and availability of data; overseeing the validity and accuracy of district databases.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts orientation and in-service training for individuals, schools, departments, and outside agencies for the purpose of providing ongoing support and maximizing the capabilities data users.
  • Designs a wide variety of queries and reporting options across all district systems for the purpose of responding to requests for specific data and developing new reports.
  • Evaluates requests for support from a variety of internal and external sources for the purpose of creating and delivering information within requested timelines.
  • Maintains manual and electronic documents, files, and records (reporting calendars; design specifications, documentation, distribution lists, user IDs, etc.) for the purpose of providing up-to-date reference and audit trail.
  • Prepares a variety of written materials (export documentation, import specifications, data file layouts, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
  • Researches data sources, specialized reporting techniques, training methods, etc. for the purpose of improving productivity, data security, and recommending products that meet district requirements.
  • Responds to inquiries from internal and external parties for information and data extraction for the purpose of resolving problems, providing information, and/or referring to appropriate personnel.

Required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: using query and report generation software; planning and managing projects.

  • Knowledge-based Competencies

Required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: database queries, report generation techniques, laws and codes related to data privacy and security.

  • Ability-based Competencies

Required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of processes. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: being attentive to detail; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; communicating with persons with diverse technical knowledge and skills; maintaining confidentiality; and working with frequent interruptions.

Requirements
High school diploma or GED equivalent

Advance use and proficiency in Microsoft software applications

Physical Requirements
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity.

Generally the job requires 75% sitting, 15% walking, and 10% standing.
