Job Title:
Design Engineer – Immersion Cooling (Mechanical)
Company Overview:
Midas is a technology company that manufactures the Cooling Infrastructure that enable digital, automation, storage, communication, and AI technologies. Midas is experiencing and expecting significant growth and are looking for the right Design Engineer to join our team
Location:
Austin, Texas
Employment Type:
Full-Time
Reports To:
VP of Engineering
Job Summary:
Midas is seeking a skilled Design Engineer with a mechanical engineering background to join our team in developing innovative immersion cooling solutions for high-performance computing, data centers, and advanced electronics. The successful candidate will design, analyze, and optimize thermal management systems using immersion cooling technologies, ensuring efficient heat dissipation, reliability, and sustainability. This role requires expertise in mechanical design, fluid dynamics, thermal analysis, and exposure to compute hardware environments—working closely with server, GPU, and rack-level integration teams to deliver production-ready solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and Development:
Create and iterate designs for immersion cooling systems, including tanks, heat exchangers, fluid distribution systems, compute-rack interfaces, and structural components using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks). - Thermal and Fluid Analysis:
Perform thermal simulations and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses to optimize cooling performance and ensure compatibility with dielectric fluids and system requirements. - Compute Hardware Integration:
Work alongside electrical and compute system engineering teams to develop interface requirements for servers, GPU trays, PSUs, backplanes, and cable routing inside immersion environments. - Material Selection:
Specify materials for immersion cooling systems, considering compatibility with dielectric coolants, corrosion resistance, and thermal conductivity. - Prototyping and Testing:
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to build prototypes, conduct performance testing, and validate designs under real-world compute loads and thermal conditions. - System Integration:
Ensure seamless integration of immersion cooling systems with existing infrastructure, including servers, power supplies, compute architectures, and facility cooling loops. - Configuration & Rack Layout:
Support conceptual and detailed layout of immersed compute deployments, including chassis spacing, mounting strategies, and access/service tooling. - Documentation:
Prepare detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and technical reports for manufacturing and quality assurance. - Collaboration:
Work closely with the balance of Engineering and Production teams to ensure solutions are commercially and production ready. - Innovation and Sustainability:
Stay updated on advancements in immersion cooling and compute system design practices, contributing to sustainable energy-efficient cooling architectures. - Compliance:
Ensure designs comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and customer specifications (e.g., ASHRAE, UL, or relevant thermal/compute hardware management standards). - Build and Process:
Ability to assemble prototype designs, assist operations in developing assembly processes, and train deployment locations as needed.
Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
Experience:
- 3+ years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in thermal management, compute hardware packaging, data center cooling, HVAC, or liquid/immersion cooling systems.
- Hands-on experience working with compute chassis design, rack architecture, power distribution hardware, or data center infrastructure strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo, or AutoCAD) and CFD tools (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, COMSOL, or STAR-CCM+).
Technical Skills:
- Strong understanding of heat
